Well, that question is really like this one:"how long is a piece of string?" Basically, it depends what you have done. I am presuming you have basically just done the quests and gone on to Baldurs Gate? That of course is fine, some others (like me) prefer to do it another way. I will usually explore every area on the map, mostly before I go to Baldur's Gate. In my latest solo Barbarian run this is exactly what I have done, it does help in some quests in the city though, as you will need to be higher level. But on the same token level 4 is perfectly acceptable, and you will easily gain levels.

I played a Ranger who dual classed at 2nd level into Cleric.
I found it very powerful to have access to all cleric and druid spells, as well as be able to get ** in any blunt weapon. I was only about 2000 xp (or however much it is to reach Ranger 2) behind a straight cleric, with many benefits (see above) plus the racial enemy. I don't have the savegame anymore, but that was a lot of fun. [ 11-07-2004, 10:42 PM: Message edited by: krunchyfrogg ] |
*piping up rather late in the game*
PICK MEEE! Yuh. Garrett the human thief. ((Yes, yes, I am a huge honking THIEF: THE DARK PROJECT fan)). I have used this character from BG1 straight through Throne and have also used him in the two Icewind Dales. Thief has always been my favorite class. Sadly I don't have his stats at hand. |
My Character: Kestrel Daystar
Name: Kestrel Daystar Age: 248 Race: Kiefling Deity: Thespia, Mistress of the Arts Homeland: Harpsglen Vale Lineage: Demonic Father, Sylvan Elf Mother Profession: Bardic Ranger Height: 57 Weight: 97 lbs Build: Slender; Toned Hair: Midnight Blue, Several Silvery Grey Streaks; Smooth and Flowing Eyes: Deep Ocean Blue Skin: Tanned; Smooth and Unblemished Ears: Very Long; Finely Pointed Teeth: Pearly White; Feral, Fang like Scent: Freshly Cut Grass and Ripe Apples Languages: Common; Elvish; Sylvan; Draconic; Abyssal and Celestial Personality: Friendly, Jovial, Care-free, Thoughtful, Romantic, Mischievous Favourite Colour: Forest Green Favourite Weapon: Dual Recurved Rapiers Distinguishing Features: Adorning his face is a trim goatee and stubble extending up his jaw to his ear, such a feature a rarity amongst elven kind; Feral like fangs, a feature inherited from demon lineage; Written upon his wrists and the backs of his hands are inscribed a set of matching tattoos depicting archaic symbols. I have had this character through my PnP days, Baldur's Gate I through to Throne of Bhaal. I also played him through both Icewind Dales aswell as Neverwinter Nights and its expansions. I am also half-way through writing my first novel, with him as the main character. |
Very interesting Kestrel. How did you implement him into the Baldur's Gate game?
|
After playing through all of the Baldur's Gate Saga, I chose the mortal path and so I just carried on from there, deciding to RP that all he has done thereafter, from Icewind Dale to Neverwinter Nights, to Icewind Dale II is just continueing his adventures throughout Faerūn. I just slotted the PnP in between Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights.
--Kestrel-- |
I meant class, stats, proficiencies, ect.
|
Ahh, I see. Heheh. Sorry, I thought you meant storywise.
Lets see: Class: Bard (Trueclass) Strength: 12 Dexterity: 16 Constitution: 14 Wisdom: 12 Intelligence: 13 Charisma: 17 Dual Wielding: +3 Long Sword: +2 --Kestrel-- |
Cool. I was just curious as to whether you'd go Bard or Ranger. How did the Bard class work out for you? Who was in your party?
|
I was quite impressed with the Bard class actually, as I had heard many negative things said about the class. I have always had a fondness for Bards though however, so I decided to go that route (which I could obviously make a Bard/Ranger in NWN).
Overall though I enjoyed the Bard class, and found the stronghold quest quite enjoyable (if not alittle drawn out). I was alittle miffed at seeing Haer'dalis for the first time though went I playing through as Kestrel. I had no idea of Haer'dalis' character before making Kestrel and I saw many similarities (curse you Black Isle ;) ). Many party consisted of: Kestrel Daystar - Kiefling - Bard Jaheira - Elf - Druid/Fighter (romance) Aerie - Elf - Mage/Cleric Mazzy - Halfling - Fighter (which I later SK to paladin) Haer'dalis - Tiefling - Bard Jan Jansen - Gnome - Illusionist/Thief I found it fairly interesting with those character and it wasn't too difficult either. Overall I had a good time playing through, and now am playing through again with added mods (which, I didnt have the first time I ever played BGII with Kestrel) and now have Keto in my troupe. --Kestrel-- |
I've got three I really like, but this is the one i'm playing at the moment...
Clarissa Glassfire 5th(or 6th, can't remember) lvl, Invoker, Female STR:12 DEX:16(18 with gaunlets) CON:17 INT:18 WIS:11 CHA:15 Sling +1, Quarter Staff +1, Robes of something, Ring of Protection +1, Ring of wizardry |
At last, I have completed my latest adventure. Inspired by Neomi's 'Company of Prince Humperdink', I set out to play from start to finish with a low level party. No Level-ups allowed, so my companions were at Level 2 throughout.
I think it is fair to say that this character had a little bit of unused potential by the time we had finished. Her stats at end of game were: Raven : Level 1 Bard Str = 16 Dex = 18 Con = 15 Int = 18 Wis = 11 Cha = 18 HP = 10 XP Gained (but not used) = 54K Spells learnt = nil Weapons used = nil No. of kills = nil Bardsong = continuous play Now I bet you're thinking that a character like this would have no chance against the final Boss; but she stood there, toe to toe with the big guy, took his best shots and recieved no damage. Hit-points, who needs them! |
How'd a level 1 bard get 10 HP? ;)
|
At Level 1, I don't think the game follows the rule of 6HP max. If I create a Thief or a Bard, then they often start with more than 6HP.

As usually, when it comes to CRPGs, I prefer to play Baldur’s Gate with different characters at the same time (shifting from one character/saved game to another whenever like), trying out different ways to handle the situations and different party members. But my current favorite is:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alistia http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ne/Alistia.bmp Gender: Female Race: Human Alignment: Lawful Good (Well, sort of… She behaves more like a Neutral Evil now, but unfortunately, Baldur’s Gate doesn’t allow the change of alignment.) Class (Level): Fallen Paladin (7) Strength: 19 Dexterity: 16 Constitution: 16 Intelligence: 10 Wisdom: 13 Charisma: 19 THAC0 (with her prime weapon – Spider’s Bane): 5 Attacks (with her prime weapon – Spider’s Bane): 2 Lore: 7 Armor Class: -3 Hit Points: 84 Weapon Proficiencies: Large Sword +++ Bow ++ Spear + -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Currently, Alistia is once again trying to kill Sarevok; having failed to do this the first time she tried because of a pair of skeleton warriors that got in her way. She is currently about to return to Baldur’s Gate after putting the Iron Throne’s leaders to blade, intending to kill her “brother” once and for all. Surrounded by trusted companions (black-hearted murderers most of ‘em – Shar-Teel, Faldorn, Edwin, Eldoth, and Tiax), Alistia is VERY confident that skeleton warriors won’t stop her this time… [ 01-27-2005, 09:03 AM: Message edited by: Black Robed One ] |
Well, I'm new to the game and he is my first and only, so I guess he must be my favourite:
Orbost Quickfire Half-Elf (coz being a half-breed gives a more interesting background than being a straight elf or human) Ranger (coz I've always had a thing for ourdoorsey types, and I figured that a fighter-class would be easier to start with) Neutral Good (coz I'm a nice guy!) Str 14 Dex 18 Con 17 Wis 11 Int 12 Cha 15 Didn't want to waste time rolling stats. I rerolled for about 1 minute until I got 18 dex (coz I wanted to be a decent archer), and decent str, con and cha. I figure my stats aren't going to win or lose the game for me, as long as I get my tactics right, so why keep rerolling if your basic stats are OK. Orbost is currently Level 4, hooked up with Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc and Dynaheir, and hunting for Capt Brage. (I just found the little girl's dead cat in the waterfall near Nashkel, and she gave me her allowance money as reward - sweet ) |
great party, and nice looking character, orbost! good luck!
|
Marty
Elf Ranger (archer in BG2!) Stats (I rolled these very easily!) STR 18/99 DEX 19 CON 17 INT 10 WIS 16 CHA 8 Needless to say, he his having fun in Amn: STR 19 DEX 20 CON 18 INT 11 WIS 18 CHA 18 Note that the CHA is due to an item. All other stats are due to tomes. 104 stat points! |
A powergamed character doesn't really require any more than 93 stat points.
Put 3 into Charisma and use the Ring of Human Influence/Rod of Smiting Charisma wraparound bug to get 25 Charisma. |
Well, I rolled it very quickly, so I really wasn't intentionally powergaming that much. Also, elf CHA minimum is 8.
|
When rolling, I usually look at the attributes that do not have a minimum requirement. e.g. when rolling a Paladin, I look at STR, DEX and CON because I know both CHA and WIS have high minimum requirements.
I re-roll until each of these is 15+ (or two very high rolls) before checking the other stats. This ensures that the character is going to be a contender. With an elven character, I would ignore CHA and again concentrate on STR, CON and DEX. The only difference is that there would be two other variables to consider. Note that Rangers have minimums for several of their stats, making them a good contender for powergaming (I'm also thinking ranger > cleric dual). |
Dace, you should put a warning about powergaming in your signature! :D

Hehe, I know man. I agree with you: there's an enormous difference between cheating and powergaming.

Black Robed One, never saw what was so EXTREMLY difficult about Baldur's Gate for so many people to create unrealistically overpowered characters... There must be something that is fun about it, but BRO fails to see this something...
|
The protagonist is the child of a <EDITED FOR THE SAKE OF HAVING A RELATIVELY SPOILER FREE POST>. What is so unrealistic about the character having godlike abilities?
|
Quote:
Also, keep in mind, that apart from some special abilities the characters gains, he is effectively still a mortal (at least until Throne of Bhaal; I haven’t played it yet, so I don’t know if character become a deity in there or no), with perfectly mortal ability scores, even though they will likely be somewhat higher then those of normal people (including recruitable NPCs). Also keep in mind that… !!!SPOILER!!! Don’t read the following unless you finished the first half of Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn!!! You have been warned! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . …Imoen is a Bhaalspawn as well, which doen’t prevent her from having high (18, 17, 16, 16, 11, 9) but not overpowering ability scores. Why should the main character be different in this regard? P.S. BRO still fails to understand where is fun in having such unrealistically high ability scores, especially since more realistic characters are capable of passing the game without too much difficulty… |
Sarevok is the son of a deity, and he's got pretty good stats.
If you've played ToB, there's a city with a ton of Bhaalspawn in it, and most of 'em are commoners. The protagonists stats should be largely varied. There are some people who enjoy playing a guy with really high stats, there are some who hate it. It's your game, have fun with whatever you like. |

After I finish the game with her, I may start it again, eventually brining Mimiru's attributes to (18/14, 20, 14, 14, 10, 16) by the time she is in Balduer's Gate II. Then again, I may choose not to do it; Mimiru is a fun character to play regardless of attributes! |

Can i ask why the str is 18/14?
|
because when DnD people got tired of people maxing out strength all the time the decided to add a percentage too so somebody with 18/14 is not as strong as one with 18/45. 18/00 is the best as it means 18/100.
|
my all time favourite.
Thorin Dwarf Fighter/Cleric (can't remember levels, however high the exp cap is for totsc.) blunt weapons ** missile weapons ** some other unimportant stuff Strength : 19 Dex:18 Con:20 Int: 9 i think Wis:21 Cha : 9 not the best of rolls, but a real powerhouse nevertheless. with this guy i stormed through bg1, bg2 and ToB solo on insane. i especially liked crafting the big metal unit after all my work |
I'm having a ton of fun with my new character, who is a 1/2 Elf Fighter/Mage/Cleric.
He does take a long time to level up, but that's ok. I am having fun with Mr. Versatility, and he just fills in everywhere on my team, which follows the BGII "standard party." I rolled pretty good stats: Krunchy F/M/C S: 16 D: 18 C: 18 I: 16 W: 14 C: 10 |
I'm probably gonna try a Mage/Thief if this guy dies, but he's my favorite so far:
Michael (not quite a Lord yet...) Human/Fighter Neutral Good Lvl. 7 Str. 18/86 Dex. 19 (Tome) Con. 19 (Tome) Int. 12 Wis. 13 (Tome..just got it!) Chr. 16 (Tome and Algernon's Cloak) Large Sword ++++ Bow + Spiked Weapons + (I love flails.. skull crushers) Favorite Beverage: Elminster's Choice Beer [ 05-19-2005, 07:50 PM: Message edited by: Lord Michael ] |
I have an Elven Thief named Kyrvias with stats of:
Str: 14 (no tomb) Dex: 19 (20 with tomb) Con: 16 (no tomb) Int: 12 (no tomb) Wis: 10 (13 with tomb) Chr: 18 (19 with tomb) *'s in Small swords, bows, and daggers. 95% in Stealth 80% in Find Traps I like stealthing. Its too bad you can't multi task and stealth + find traps... |
