Obviously a newbie question but I have 5 scrolls of identity and cannot identify any item. Is there a level restriction on identifying certain objects?

What are the actions I must take to identify an item?

Sorry to be so stupid but I do appreciate the assistance.

Thanks

To identify something just right-click on the item, so you get the description. On the bottom of the description-screen should be a button labeled 'identify'. Click it and you get the choice to use a spell (if you have one memorised) or a scroll.

EDIT: Oh, and BTW Welcome to Ironworks ;)

right click on the item you need to identify, click on identify, and then choose 'scroll' if you want to identify by scroll, or 'spell' if you have an identify spell remembered.... you can also go to temples and let them identify the item for you

There are also glasses that cast Identify three times a day, for sale on the second floor of the house where that Shadow Thief stays who will accept 15,000 gold pieces from you. It's well worth it, IMO, since it leaves a mage free to concentrate level 1 spells on multiple Magic Missiles--one of the best things any spellbook can contain.

Thanks for the amazingingly fast response....but my problem is that even with 5 scrolls stacked in my inventory both"scroll" and "spell" option are grayed out (unusable) when I right click on the item.

Any ideas?

The problem is probably because the person you are using is a mage and of the opposite school to whatever school Identify is part of. I know because Edwin can't use scrolls I believe.

If that isn't your problem then you should check out Baldurdash.

That's probably it - Conjurers can't cast spells from the school of Divination, which includes Identify.

Edwin can use scrolls, but you're still right: he can't use scrolls of the opposite school to his specialization.

sauranan 01-23-2002 03:38 PM

Thanks again but I have tried it using all members of my party -fighter, thief, cleric. Same results. Does the character using the scrolls have to be a mage?

Tormentor 01-23-2002 03:42 PM

yes...
well then there's no other option but going to a temple for you, or find yourself a mage

Thanks to everyone.

I have posted on a number of gaming forums and have never received such prompt responses. This is great.

You sure got that right!

There are plenty of other good NPCs who CAN use spells or scrolls of identify, like Nalia, Imoen, Aerie, or Jan.

I noticed that Edwin can use those glasses of identifying. Isn't that a violation of the AD&D rules? I didn't think that mages could use ANY magic items which used magic from their opposition schools.

Talthyr Malkaviel 01-23-2002 04:17 PM

Ahhh, that's where you are mistaken, it DOES have to be a mage, but conjurers CAN use divination spells, up to level 3.

Just get those Glasses of Identification. IIRC, any character can use them, even the most rock-headed Berserker or Barbarian.

Dundee Slaytern 01-24-2002 03:37 AM

Wizard Slayers cannot use the Glasses of Identification.

Ike YarakZ 01-24-2002 11:10 AM

That is a bummer now... damn... :(

fable 01-24-2002 11:24 AM

Can't say I've ever tried those glasses with a wizard slayer, but I know that druids, bards, and paladins can use it, because Cernd, Jaheira, Viconia, Haer'dalis (before he advanced far enough) and Keldorn all did the honors with the glasses in various parties of mine. :D
