I started smoking in 1984 and for the first few years it was only when I was out drinking, but before long, I was buying them by the carton. :(

Today marks 5 months nicotine free. I smoked my last cigarette on May 17th. :D

Great news Ronn. You deserve a pat on the back. It took my wife being diagnosed with emphysema and told if she kept on smoking that she would be dead in 2-3 months to quit. I'm glad it didn't take something that drastic for you.

Timber Loftis 10-17-2003 12:04 PM

Good for you, Ronn.

I'm needing to curb my smoking habit. I've gone from occassional to daily. It's weird -- I don't smoke all day long, and then I have like 5 cigs between 9 pm and 1 am.

Ronn_Bman 10-17-2003 12:07 PM

Thanks!

The strange thing is, I'm not really sure how I did it.

I've tried very hard before and have managed to quit two different times for about a year back in the 90's, but then I was always thinking about smoking. Not this time though. I guess I just needed to be ready.

RoSs_bg2_rox 10-17-2003 12:09 PM

good for you Ronn. It musta been hard to give up, but i bet you feel good now you have. Timber, if Ronn can do it, so can you!!

Smoking is one habit that doesn't lend itself to moderation, that's for sure. ;)

My wife used to do the same thing. She would not smoke at work, but when she came home, she smoked quit a bit. She quit when she got pregnant in '97, but about a year after Kelsey was born, she started again. Then two years ago, she quit for good.

<--------Knight of Rose, huh?

The latest version of the beholder was certainly better than the first, but I'm glad to be moving on... even if it means expressing my feminine side.

Stormymystic 10-17-2003 12:44 PM

congrats man :D no maybe you can help me quit, I gave up after the first 2 days

Epona 10-17-2003 12:58 PM

Well done mate!

I had my last one on 28th September

pritchke 10-17-2003 01:07 PM

Congratulations!!!!

Assuming you smoked 1 pack a day for 5 months at about $10CAN/pack you saved about $1400CAN.

You could buy yourself a new computer. ;)

I smoked a pack a day. Prices have actually gone down since I quit, but I was paying $25US per carton, that's $75 per month. By quiting, I've been able to pay for my wife and myself to join the local fitness center and still pocket $5 per month.

Damn good man! It's a hard habit to break! I am cutting down slowly, and will be clean soon as well. It's a dirty, NASTY habit--oh yeah, it kills too.

Any kids here thinking of smoking because 'cool' kids do it, DON'T guys. It does nothing but kill people. My mom died from it.

Hang in there Ron, and good going!!

Way to go!

Ziroc and Stormy, just keep at it.

Bungleau 10-17-2003 04:22 PM

Congrats and good luck to you all! I was never a serious smoker, but I quit a while ago. I know that it's something each person has to decide to do; well-intentioned "support" from others doesn't help if you're not interested.

Best of luck to you all on the continued journey.

Timber Loftis 10-17-2003 04:33 PM

Damn, now I want a cigarette.

Hey, Ronn, sending your wife to the health club will lead to more enjoyment for you in the end, now won't it? ;)

Aelia Jusa 10-17-2003 04:34 PM

Congratulations Ronn! That's a fantastic effort. I also think it's great that you're congratulating yourself - it always make a victory much sweeter when you feel personally fulfilled

Sush!

You're going to ruin the whole "I did it for my health" facade. ;)

slicer15 10-17-2003 05:24 PM

Yeah, congratulations man!! Man, that must have taken some willpower! Keep it up!

I personally detest smoking...nasty habit (please, this doesn't mean I detest the person who does it, just the habit. I don't think less of people if they smoke. ;) ). I can't stand the smell and the area around my school reeks of it. :( . Why do so many young people smoke these days? When I go to the shops down the road I get asked by 13 - 14 year olds to buy cigarrettes. Its kinda depressing...

Zuvio 10-17-2003 05:40 PM

BAH! I still have a looooong way to go (gave up smoking 1 month ago). I smoked like 50 cigs per three days. I stopped cold turkey. Don't have any problems so far, I only miss it when going out to cafes. But I do know I'm making some fun with the money I save! I've been calculating: stop smoking for one year and get a go-to-college-for-one-year-free-cars!! How's that for investing in your future? :D

Chewbacca 10-17-2003 06:50 PM

Congrats Ronn! I know firsthand it is a tough addiction to beat! Kudos!

SpiritWarrior 10-17-2003 07:04 PM

I wish I could do the same :D . Hey, congrats.

P.S. Chewbacca I notice you posted twice; Just wondering if you got that forum time-out thing cuz I did around the same time you posted and wondered whether It's still happening other people.

kroma 10-17-2003 07:30 PM

Well, I guess that marks 6 months for me then! (I quit on April 17th). I smoked for 6 years prior to that, and this is the first time Ive really attempted to quit.
BTW - well done Ronn_Bman, keep it up!!!!

mistral4543 10-17-2003 08:35 PM

Congratulations, Ronn Bman

I've never smoked before and have been tempted on a number of occasions to try one out (it's kind of a pity going through life without experiencing what it has to offer :D ). But, the smell does put me off and I've somehow checked myself against taking the first puff - heard that it's VERY addictive.

Sagramore 10-17-2003 08:49 PM

hey y'alls...congratulations Ronn! and Timber, i believe you can kick the habit too...being in high school, im in an environment where smoking to cool to some (very, sadly, i might add)..anyways, 3 kids got high one night after a party and drove home...they didn't make it...as a tribute me and my friends named our band DEW (each of their frist initials)...anyways...well done Epona too...just try to keep it up until my birthday, your one month mark
