Anyone have a good recomendation for a PC game? I've been playing Baldur's Gate (ToB), Morrowind and Civ III, and am looking for another "thinking-man's-game."
Mostly I enjoy games which allow a lot of variation in technique and strategy, and where I can plan things out, or a truly exceptional storyline. Unfortunately, it seems a lot of the recent releases are focussed more on killer graphics and multiplayer mayhem than on an immersive experience. My pc specs are decent enough to handle anything on the market, but I wouldn't mind an older game either (provided it's available somewhere...) Someone please help me! :) [ 09-21-2004, 01:39 AM: Message edited by: theGrimm ] |
Well, for tactical fun in the AD&D 2nd edition, you could give Icewind Dale a shot. It certainly doesn't have the varied storyline of Baldur's Gate, but it's a decent game. Think of it as a hack'n'slash, fairly linear version of BG; lots of fighting strategy involved. You also get to create your entire party, which is a fun bonus.
It's also been out a while, so you can get IWD 1 (complete with the Heart of Winter expansion) and IWD 2 in one collection for about $30. For that price it's darn good, IMO. As another plus, there's already forums dedicated to it here at IW. Check into them and ask some detailed questions, if you wish. |
If its an immersive experence try Planescape Torment.
It rocks as a game. I played it for hours and hours. (I've only recently sold it to another board member) If you do get NWN (neverwinter nights) come and play it online with the other board members, you are bound to have a fun time. The platinum edition has just been released (with the original + both expansions) |
Silent Storm is pretty awesome (very much like Jagged Alliance... of course, get Jagged Alliance 2 if you haven't got it), tho you might wanna wait for the expansion (think there'll be some gold edition game+expansion thingy).

Septerra Core
Knights of the Old Republic(KotOR) Planescape Torment Fallout 2 Age of Wonders 1 Pharaoh |
Warlords 3 Dark Lords Rising. You can customise your own troops. Age of wonders shadow magic has great replayability and every race has a different tactic. Turn based. Jagged Alliance 2 the best however.

Age of Mythology is a pretty good RTS which I've been playing. Loads of different units, historical and mythological. Bit like Warcraft 3.

Planscape: Torment, Icewind Dale series, Age of Mythology, Fallout, Morrowind.

I totally agree with pharoah. I got it for a fiver here in the uk and it is so fun and strategic its unbelivable. I have had endless hours of fun playing it; probably the best value for money game i ever bought...

I've pre-ordered Starwars Battlefront. It looks amazing. Shall be getting that in 3 days :D

well ive been needing to get a gamecube game but does anyone know of any new ones that are coming or that are out that are fairly new?
|
x-men legends comes out sometime this week i think for the cube. i dont' really know anything about the game, but i think its kind of like the old xmen arcade game.
|
I'd recommend warcraft 3 and it's expansion (great real time strategy now with characters). I second the motion on Knights of the Old Republic, great game! I have also found my self loving doom 3 and Call of Duty. As far as gamecube games are concerned, I highly recommedn Tales of Symphonia!

Hmm... Summoner's nice. RPG, mostly part-based, fun game, good graphics, and it's a few years old (meaning, it's cheap). Ground Control's also rather nice... Squad-based RTS (as opposed to a unit-production one), fun, good graphics, also a few years old. Hmm... other games that might work would be Gothic II, Morrowind (although this one's not much in the way of strategy), and Icewind Dale 2... As some others have said, Knights of the Old Republic and Icewind Dale would also work nicely. Some more stuff coming out soon, but not out yet, sadly.

as others already have said; fallout 1 & 2, warcraft 3 & expansion, age of mythology. other games worth to mention are sudden strike 1 & 2 (WW2 based strategy games)
i'm going to play doom 3 and call of duty: united offensive myself now as soon as i get my new graphic gard another action game i really liked is freelancer, i've played it through 4-5 times just for the story oh, and i'm eager to see if world of warcraft is any good |
Calon, as a beta tester for World of Warcraft I can't say much about the game at this time. What I can tell you is I thought it was great! and it is also way cheaper per month than many other MMORPG's (like $4 american a month!).
|
oh, it will be that cheap? i thought it would be around 10$ / 10€ a month
maybe i'll invest in it then would have been nice with a beta test account to try it out with before though |
Well my vote goes for warcraft III. Also make sure you get the expansion. Just becareful it will suck you in and never let you leave. Just ask ross. ;)
