the original thread used to be here

the previous thread is here:

Cloudy's Cafe

Come in, be welcome, be comfortable, be yourself

Welcome to Cloudy's Cafe, a place to have a cup of coffee or a good
darjeeling and the finest in conversation and camaraderie.

The proprietor asks that you follow a few simple guidelines:

this is a real conversation zone, not a role-play zone

* no flaming; if you disagree with a viewpoint expressed by any patron, please do so in a civil manner

* any topic is fair game, but keep posts to the standards that Ziroc has set for the entire forum, please (ie: foul language is not appropriate and things should be suitable for all audiences)
-a side note from Cloudy: I see this as a place for those short
conversations about a new baby or the latest soccer fiasco, not for things that are big enough to warrant their own threads, by all means give those things the space they need and post separately!

* Please, no one word or smiley posts (Ziroc has declared them 'real spam' and the proprietor doesn't want the reputuation of "good spam" to suffer!)

* do feel free to be serious or silly and enjoy the company of others while you are here. By all means POST if you have something to say, even to start another topic , we can handle multiple chats, we're a CAFE!!! But be courteous and don't disrupt a conversation just to disrupt it.

Come on in! The bar is stocked with coffees, teas, juices and waters from around the world. And purple napkins, of course!

The lighting is low, the golden oak counters and tables glow with inviting warmth. Near the window, the lighting is brighter, as comfy, plush leather armchairs wait for those who'd like to read a book while relaxing to music or just lazily watch the world go by.

Cloudbringer 12-04-2004 02:32 AM

 PLEASE NOTE

This is a modified reminder that I've posted before in reply to someone asking "can we spam the cafe". It still holds true, so I'm going to repeat it periodically for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Read the first post of the thread, it's NOT a spam zone. If you want to discuss you grades, a problem with a teacher, the weather, your neighbor's new car etc.....etc.. (real life conversations) this is the place. I don't mind a SMALL amount of spam but when the Cafe gets to be 8 pages in one day and it's all one liner pure spam, I have to ask people not to do it because most of the members who would come to talk about their day or things that they want advice or sympathy or cheers on, will not post in that atmosphere. I want you to be comfy here, but not at the expense of other members.

So the answer is NO, I don't want to see page after page of roleplay spam or one liner spamfests that could be done on msn or aim etc. because our goal is to TALK WITH one another , not fill up a cafe in five hours. ;)

Ahh, thanks, this will hit the spot!

So, my wife starts ripping out all the Christmas stuff last night, then she gets on the phone. Now it's all sitting there and she has a course all day today and works tonight 'til midnight. I'm so tired of all the material stuff in the house. I just can't make her understand that Christmas seems so much more to me. All these stupid snowmen all over the house. She must have over 30. Then there's the stupid looking Reindeer with lights on it's antlers and she never respects my wishes to put things up just before Christmas and leave it well into January.

Gangrell 12-04-2004 06:59 AM

Well guys, I'm off this morning to beginning the SAT's, I'm not too worried about it, just going to be a long four hours. See you all then.

Callum 12-04-2004 07:19 AM

Have fun and good luck!

I have a Japanese exam tomorrow that will take about the same amount of time... 2 15 to 6 30

But before that, I am acting as a ball boy for a local rugby tournament.

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 12-04-2004 08:06 AM

I went back to bed. It was just too early. And I enjoyed second breakfast! No exams for me! Just a little house cleaning I guess.. and laze around at the cafe and chat.

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 12-04-2004 05:55 PM

You learn Japanese in International School? I thought International School in Malaysia follow British education system? Or is that an extra subject offered?

No problem. It's 1 AM here so I have to go to bed. (Again)! :D

Callum 12-04-2004 07:10 PM

Kakero, we have to take an extra language, our choice between Bahasa Melayu, French, German, Mandarin, or Japanese.

And although many international schools in Malaysia do follow the British system, they don't have to, and many don't. My own school follows the British system from years 7 through 11 (with the International GCSE exams in years 10 and 11), and then the International Baccelaureatte (probably spelled that wrong, but who cares? ;) ), which is based in Switzerland, in years 12 and 13.

The primary school uses the IB Primary Years Programme.

So no, we don't follow the British system that closely ;) .

Rugby in this heat! tell me it is at least played in the evening or early morning Good luck with the Exam tomorrow Callum.

Variol Elmwood, I dont like the christmas decorations being put up too early either. But my pet hate is people calling it seasons greetings and such. It's Christmas!

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 12-04-2004 08:50 PM

Yeah, but it's not Christmas for everyone Wellard. I'm very much a Christian, but out of respect for others, I try to use "Happy Holidays" when I remember.

RoSs_bg2_rox 12-05-2004 01:00 AM

Stormymystic 12-05-2004 03:04 AM

why can I not sleep?! this is getting old now, I get sleepy, I go to bed, I lie awake for hours, until I give up and come up front. I have taken sleeping pills already, so do not give that advice. but if anyone knows anything else, please help.

Xen 12-05-2004 03:54 AM

We only realize how sleep can be precious when we can't sleep right? I got up cleaned my flat, ate breakfast and now I am here at the cafe wondering what to do. Do you have any suggestions fellow IW members?

Aerich 12-05-2004 04:32 AM

If I have problems sleeping (rarely), it's usually because I haven't had enough physical exercise and my mind is still awake. Getting to sleep is a matter of making the body's tiredness override the mind's propensity to think about things at all times.

Try getting up and doing a bunch of activities. Pushups, situps, a walk, weights, whatever. Do it for about 20 minutes, give yourself a few minutes to cool down and let your heart rate drop, then go to bed. Always works for me.

I'm up still because I'm not done my portion for an exam preparation study group I have tomorrow, uh today. A few more case summaries and off to bed I go. It's only 1:30 here, so I'll get my 6 hours of nap time.

...beat me to it! Do you find you lie down and you have all this stuff running through your head?. It makes it very hard to get to sleep. Often reading works for. Just a few pages and my eyes get tired. Other times I have to consciously tell me mind to shut up. It's hard but try to think of just one thing, like the number 2 and force all the other thoughts away. Try it.

Either hit yourself in the head with a sledgehammer, or smoke a bigass joint. That'll make you want to close your eyes. :D

Jorath Calar 12-05-2004 06:59 AM

Stormy, read Harry Potter, puts me always to sleep in 5 minutes...

I heard that goin to shower before bed and/or drinking tea usually helps too. You should try it.

I took a long hot bath before going, and was falling asleep in the tub. so I got out and went to bed, and the moment my head hit the pillow, I ws wide awake.
my husband suggested since the doctors tell him to take up to 4 of his pills, I should take another dose....will not do that again, I fell really wierd tihs morning.

Xen 12-05-2004 11:41 AM

I'd suggest not taking pills, becuase they can damage your stomach if you take them too much or too often. Try drinking tea then.
If everything else fails, go and count sheeps. :D

I would only add that it should be herbal tea since regular tea does have caffine also; although it is different and good for you!

lol, tea makes me hyper. counting sheep? they way my min works is I can count sheep, and still be thinking of everything else, it is like it works in overtime. I am not sure why either. I multitask, even when I am trying to sleep. sad huh?

Xen 12-05-2004 11:47 AM

yes. I usually drink green tea.

Attalus 12-05-2004 11:59 AM

Mmmm, fried for breakfast. Wellard, that is one of my pet peeves, too. When I say something like "enjoy the holidays," I do include Thanksgiving and Chankah, but Christmas is Christmas.

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 12-05-2004 12:44 PM

I'm just happy (dispite being Christian) that people are a little nicer to each other during Christmas.

Attalus 12-05-2004 06:14 PM

Yeah, that does make it special. As for the commercialism, you can take that or leave it. What other season do you have to think about others more than yourself?

That’s true Attalus, with living a busy life far away from my (original) family, Christmas does make me stop and think about them much more, as well as many distant friends. It also acts as a circuit breaker to people who have annoyed you over the year, allowing you to put rubbish behind you, give a genuine offer of peace and goodwill and too facilitate a fresh start with them again. This is all from someone who no longer classes himself as a Christian but respects the spirit, hope and message that Christmas brings.

Definitely true; there's nothing like an excuse to forgive & forget all the mess that's happened over the year.

RoSs_bg2_rox 12-05-2004 10:56 PM

God will someone please help me, its 4am and I have just played WC3 for 4 hours. What is happening to me, in the last 4 days I haven't been to bed before 4.30!

Well, as the words of Xen once said, I think I'l go to bed now :D

This does of course have the unwanted side affect of waking up all itchy from the grass... :D

I agree with the exercise thing...

As for Christmas, I think its ridiculous to "respect other religions" by saying Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings. It is a *Christian* holiday, so call it by its Christian name. Besides which, I'm sure that there isn't a PC term for Hari Raya, or Deepavali. It's prejudiced against Christians to try and make them use a different name...
Years ago those would have been my exact words. But, I came to realise that non Christians don't really have a choice in this Holiday. They can't go to work or shopping on the 25th, so I we have to respect what they do during the Holiday. I don't celebrate gay pride and I cettainly don't want anybody sticking that in my face. Many of my Christian friends don't do Halloween because of what it represents, so they shouldn't have to here "happy halloween" all the time. Despite what we call it, lets make it great, love for fellow man etc. That's how the Holiday and Christianty should reveal itself!

Edit: sorry, I forgot, no smilies etc allowed here! (removed)

Callum 12-06-2004 07:10 AM

No smilies? I'm a big offender then... I hadn't heard that rule...

Here in Malaysia, which is a Muslim country, but with a very mixed population, EVERYONE, celebrates everything. We all wish each other "Gong Xi Fa Cai", "Selemat Hari Raya", Happy Deepavali or whatever. Everyone is just happy for a chance to celebrate, take a day off work and be happy...

No one minds AT all being given a public holiday.

I'm sure that if people really want to, they can work on Christmas day, public holiday or no...
