Rented this movie last night. I am surprised there wasn't a topic here before on this one as it is one of Marvels characters. Anyway despite hearing awful reviews I decided to rent it and really enjoyed the movie. Lots of action, and brutal revenge that only the Punisher can dish out.

Ah, the worst thing I heard about it was the same criticism levelled against Batman, That the killers of his family should have remained faceless thugs, as once the evil mastermind is dead there isn't a logical reason for him to continue that gives him the moral high ground (and the Punisher has always been on shaky moral ground to begin with)

I liked all the action in the movie. But his whole living situation was just corny to me. There was no need really for those characters.

Over here it stayed at the theater for like only 2-3 weeks.

I nearly rented it yesterday but decided to see Hidalgo again instead.

It is definitely better than the Dolph Lundgren version - but was still a bit corny for my tastes too in some places.

The living arrangement was OK I guess, but I thought the computer geek was going to be Microchip at first and was disappointed when that didn't happen.

I thought this was one of Travolta's poorer performances. I loved how Punisher set him up against his wife and best friend - but I felt that Travolta was too quick to believe the worst about them....and I HATED the cornball lines he gave his son about what happened to them.

As buff as Lundgren was, this guy actually LOOKED a lot more like the Punisher in the comics (though he could have been a bit broader through the shoulders). I did like the fact that - as tough as Punisher was - he still got his butt kicked royally a couple of times. That made him seem more real.

As for motivation - the comics covered that. He knew who the killers of his family were in the comics also - and those were some of the first punks he took out. Then he decided there were a lot of other innocents out there that would suffer like he did if he didn't do something to curb the criminal element on his own.

Very much like Batman, only without any mercy or sympathy for the bad guys. Batman tries to catch'em - Punisher goes out to kill'em.

Heh, I remember one of the Punisher comics my dad got me, one of my favorites actually, where someone is murdering cabbies, so Punisher goes undercover, builds a tank of a cab, and goes hunting, it did an excellent job of showing the killer in a sympathetic light, and despite having a twisted sense of who was responsible, the killer wasn't that different from Mr. Castle himself, she still ate a chest/face full of 12 guage shot for pulling a gun on the Punisher, but there was some very interesting questions raised, such as how much difference is there really between Frank Castle, and a random psycho on a killing spree (many superheroes would argue that there's little-none)

Of the many many punisher comics and special appearences that I have read/collected (I collected comics for 17 years) one of the more interesting one was when the puisher made a special appearence in DareDevil and it made the comparison between DD's method (catch and prosacute) and the Punishers method (make sure they don't ever harm anyone again).
