Feelgood News, March 09

Man, 75, manages to chase down much younger thief
STUART, Fla. – A suspected robber in his physical prime thought he saw an easy target outside a Stuart Best Buy. But police said that the 75-year-old victim chased down 29-year-old man, who had just snatched the victim's brand new laptop computer and printer on Sunday.

The victim told police he was waiting in front of the store for his wife to pick him up when the man grabbed the packages and ran.

Authorities said the suspect made it about 8 feet before the man grabbed him. Moments later, an off-duty deputy saw what was happening and joined the struggle.

The man was charged with robbery by sudden snatching and battery on a person over age 65. He was being held on $12,500 bail.

New news category... stuff that makes you feel good about life. Yeah, I know that it's not March... but it will be soon enough.

So.... another one for the seemingly helpless. Made it eight feet, eh? :wow:

Good Samaritan

Unemployed woman nearly loses bag of cash, checks
CONCORD, Calif. – A woman who just lost her job would also be out thousands of dollars if it weren't for the honesty of a good Samaritan. Police said a man who found a bank bag full of money and checks in a shopping center parking lot over the weekend flagged down police and turned it over.

Officers were able to track down the woman and return her lost money.

The bag contained $4,000 in cash and more than $20,000 in checks.

She told police the bag had fallen out of her purse at Kmart on Saturday night.

Turtle to get artificial flippers after shark attack

A Japanese conservation group says it plans to fit prosthetic front limbs to a sea turtle injured in what marine scientists believe was a shark attack.

"We need to pay special attention as the forelimbs will have to be strong enough to [allow her] to climb up a beach," Erika Akai, a researcher at the non-profit Sea Turtle Association of Japan said.

"She should eventually be able to lay eggs on a beach."

The injured loggerhead turtle, with a 74-centimetre long shell, was named Yu after being rescued off south-western Japan following a suspected shark attack last summer, Ms Akai said.

The animal was placed in an aquarium in western Tokushima prefecture.

"Since we cannot release her like this, because her swimming capability is only at 60 per cent of that of a healthy turtle, we decided to make prosthetic fins for her," said Ms Akai, adding that the project would start in May.

The association has set up a fund and asked Japan's largest prosthetic limb maker in western Osaka prefecture to make the artificial fins.

"We are fully aware that it will be a difficult challenge," said a spokeswoman for the company, Kawamura Gishi Co.

"But we were moved by the passion of the association and decided to take part in the project."

Miami banker gives $60 million of his own to employees
Quote:

Lots of bosses say they value their employees. Some even mean it.

And then there's Leonard Abess Jr.

After selling a majority stake in Miami-based City National Bancshares last November, all he did was take $60 million of the proceeds -- $60 million out of his own pocket -- and hand it to his tellers, bookkeepers, clerks, everyone on the payroll. All 399 workers on the staff received bonuses, and he even tracked down 72 former employees so they could share in the windfall.
All I can say is WOW!!!!

Trooper finds intruder on his couch

Police say a drunk man wandered into a state trooper's apartment in Fredericksburg and made himself at home.

An intoxicated man went to jail early Sunday after he wandered into a state trooper’s apartment and made himself at home, police said.

Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the trooper got to his home in the 300 block of Maple Court about 6 a.m. and found the suspect lying on his living room couch.

The trooper, who had just gotten off duty, had seen the suspect a short time earlier while the trooper was out walking his dog.

The suspect had been urinating against the door frame of another apartment in the Crestview Apartment complex.

The trooper ordered the man out of his apartment, Bledsoe said, but the suspect was either unwilling or unable to comply.

The trooper then handcuffed the intruder and waited for city officers to arrive.

Kyle Sherwin, 22, of Spotsylvania was charged with unlawful entry and urinating in public. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under a $2,500 bond.

Woman, 70, whacks intruder in head with sauce pan
ELYRIA, Ohio – The 70-year-old wife of an Ohio judge said teens who tried to rob her made her so angry that she whacked one in the head with a sauce pan. Ellen Basinski said she was on the phone with her husband Tuesday when four boys pushed their way into her home in Elyria, west of Cleveland.

Lorain County Judge David Basinski overheard the scuffle and raced home, while his wife grabbed her favorite pan to defend herself against the intruders rifling through her purse and cabinets.

One of the teens told police he threw a bottle of whiskey at Basinski to distract her so another boy could flee. They ran from the house but were later caught and charged with aggravated burglary.

The judge said his wife is upset that police took the pan as evidence.

Lagasse replaces pan woman used to fend off attack
ELYRIA, Ohio – Chef Emeril Lagasse says he felt so bad when he heard a woman lost one of his trademark pans while warding off home intruders that he's replacing the item.

Lagasse (leh-GAH'-see) is sending 70-year-old Ellen Basinski a whole new set of his signature cookware.

She used her favorite pan to fight the intruders at her home west of Cleveland on Tuesday. Police then took it from her to be used as evidence.

Basinski was on the phone with her husband when the teens pushed their way into her home.

Her husband, Lorain County Judge David Basinski, overheard the scuffle, called 911 and raced home. Meanwhile, his wife says she grabbed the 5-quart saucepan and hit one teen, who was going through her purse.

The four were arrested. The judge said his wife was upset that her pan was seized by police.

Small, irate woman brings in alleged truck thief

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

VERNON, B.C. - Members of the Vernon RCMP detachment in British Columbia's North Okanagan are used to seeing crooks hauled through their doors.

But they aren't used to seeing a suspect dragged in, almost by his ear, after being corralled by a small, irate woman furious about the theft of her pickup truck.

Mounties admit they had trouble keeping straight faces as they rescued the suspect from his captor early Friday morning.

The woman says she was sitting in a nearby car, waiting for her truck to warm up, when the man jumped into the pickup and sped away.

She followed in the car and, when the suspect realized he couldn't shake his tenacious tail he ditched the pickup - a block away from the Vernon RCMP detachment.

That's when the truculent truck owner collared the man who, it turns out, was not sober.

Missing Alberta girl found safe

Quote:

Police said there's nothing to suggest missing Alberta teen Jordan Long ran away. (RCMP)

An Alberta teenager who went missing two days ago has been found alive and safe, her relatives said Saturday night.

Jordan Long, 16, disappeared Thursday night after a trip to a convenience store, sparking an intensive search by RCMP and volunteers.

"She has been found and this is the best day ever," said Jordan's aunt, Bonnie Tanton.

"She is on her way to the police station. We have her back and we are so glad. This is the best day."

Tanton wouldn't provide any more details, but there were unconfirmed reports that the girl telephoned her home from a local mall.

The teenager had last been seen making some purchases at a store in Penhold, just south of Red Deer. Relatives said she drove there from her nearby home wearing pyjamas and a coat.

Twenty minutes later her family found her truck parked in front of their home with the keys inside and the lights on. Her purse and the items she bought at the store were in the truck, but her wallet and cellphone were gone.

Police combed the area around the family home on Saturday. Volunteers distributed more than 20,000 posters and a Facebook website was set up to solicit information on her whereabouts.

Alberta man faces charges after girl, 16, disappears for 2 days

Quote:

A 56-year-old man is facing charges of kidnapping and sexual assault after a 16-year-old central Alberta girl disappeared for two days before turning up at a mall, telling family she had escaped from her captor.

RCMP held a news conference Sunday in Red Deer, Alta., to announce that they had arrested a local man and seized his vehicle.

Police said the girl suffered some unspecified injuries, but is holding up well under the circumstances.

The man's name will not be released until he's formally charged, which an RCMP spokesperson said would likely happen by Monday.

The teenager had last been seen Thursday night making some purchases at a store in Penhold, just south of Red Deer. Relatives said she drove there from her nearby home wearing pyjamas and a coat.

Twenty minutes later her family found her truck parked in front of their home with the keys inside and the lights on. Her purse and the items she bought at the store were in the truck, but her wallet and cellphone were gone.

Police and volunteers combed the area Saturday and a few hours before she was located, about 200 people attended a candlelight vigil where many prayed for her safe return.

Variol asked me to link in this video. It's feelgood, for sure... although, depending on your beliefs and preferences, it may toe the moratorium line. So for those who fall on the non-Christian side of that line, you may want to skip this.

Those who take a listen will hear a young boy relating some powerful thoughts.

I ask that if anyone wishes to discuss elements of the video, they do it in another thread. This is, after all, a "feel good" thread... ;)

Tough-talking Texas woman chases down thief
FORT WORTH, Texas – Unholstering her cell phone from her bra, a tough-talking Texas woman chased down a purse snatcher in her car while calling 911. "Put it on the hood, now!" Val Renfro is heard yelling on the 911 recording after she got her man. "You give me my purse, right now."

Renfro, 65, from Arlington, had finished shopping Sunday at a Fort Worth office supply store and was getting into her car when a man shoved her twice, grabbed her purse and ran, according to a police report.

That's when she reached for her phone, which she always keeps tucked into her bra, and called 911.

While talking to the operator, Renfro drove after the fleeing man.

At one point, she apparently nudges the man with her car. The man tells her if she rolls down her window, he'll return the purse. "Like hell I will," she yells.

Onlookers eventually cornered the man near a movie theater.

Renfro said she later ran into the suspect at the police station, where he apologized to her. She said she accepted his apology.

"I don't have any animosity toward him," Renfro said. "Who am I to be the judge of him?"

Police identified the suspect as Ricky Lee Sample, 47. He remained in the Tarrant County Jail on Wednesday on a charge of aggravated robbery as well as a parole violation. His bail was set at $20,000.

Woman buys used couch and finds cat living inside
SPOKANE, Wash. – The mysterious mewing in Vickie Mendenhall's home started about the time she bought a used couch for $27. After days of searching for the source of the noise, she found a very hungry calico cat living in her sofa.

Her boyfriend, Chris Lund, was watching TV on Tuesday night and felt something move inside the couch. He pulled it away from the wall, lifted it up and there was the cat, which apparently crawled through a small hole on the underside.

Mendenhall contacted Value Village, where she bought the couch, but the store had no information on who donated it. So she took the cat to SpokAnimal CARE, the animal shelter where she works, so it could recover, and contacted media outlets in hopes of finding the owner.

Sure enough, Bob Killion of Spokane showed up to claim the cat on Thursday after an acquaintance alerted him to a TV story about it. Killion had donated a couch on Feb. 19, and his 9-year-old cat, Callie, disappeared at about the same time.

Nigerian student gets 19 years' jail for love scam
LAGOS (Reuters) – A Nigerian undergraduate has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for obtaining $47,000 (33,382 pounds) from an Australian woman by convincing her over the Internet that he was 57 years old, white, and madly in love with her.

Lawal Adekunle Nurudeen met his victim on the Internet in 2007 and convinced her that he was a British widower called Benson Lawson. He said he was an engineer working in Lagos whose wife and only child had been killed in a car accident.

"The victim, a 56-year-old woman from Australia, told the convict that she wanted a husband and all the men she had met always disappointed her," said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria's anti-corruption police.

"The convict, who is married with three children, instantly replied and told the victim she had met her Mr Right ... He sent the picture of a white man to foreclose any suspicions."

The woman sent Nurudeen money for medical treatment and travel costs to visit Australia. He spent the funds on two plots of land and a Honda Prelude car.

Nigerian confidence tricksters have a long history of extorting money via the Internet through "419" scams, named after the clause that outlaws them in Nigeria's penal code. Many are never caught.

The EFCC said Nurudeen was ordered to pay around $10,000 immediately and a further $250 a month to his victim until the full amount stolen was returned. She would also receive the proceeds of the sale of his land and car.

Legally blind Mo. man saves woman from attacker
FENTON, Mo. – A legally blind man was credited with saving a woman after authorities said a 45-year-old man broke into her apartment on Saturday night. Authorities said the man, a convicted rapist, was waiting for the woman to return home from work.

A neighbor who asked to be identified only as Jerry heard noises coming from the apartment. Jerry is blind in his left eye and has about 25 percent vision in his right eye.

Jerry told KTVI-TV that he went to the apartment and kicked open the door, surprising the would-be attacker, who locked the door. The woman came home and confirmed she didn't know the man in her apartment, and police took the suspect away.

The man was charged with burglary. The investigation is continuing.

Paraplegic Man Suffers Spider Bite, Walks Again
He has been confined to a wheelchair for 20 years. Now a paraplegic man is walking again, and his doctors call it a miracle. CBS13 went to Manteca to find out how a spider bite helped get him back on his feet.

"I closed my eyes and then I was spinning like a flying saucer," explains David Blancarte.

A motorcycle accident almost killed David 21 years ago. At the time he might have wished he was dead.

"I asked my doctor, 'Sir what happened? I can't feel my legs'," said David.

Ever since, David's been relying on his wheelchair to get around. Then the spider bite. A Brown Recluse sent him to the hospital, then to rehab for eight months.

"I'm here for a spider bite. I didn't know I would end up walking," says David.

A nurse noticed David's leg spasm and ran a test on him.

"When they zapped my legs, I felt the current, I was like 'whoa' and I yelled," he says.

He felt the current and the rush of a renewed sense of hope.

"She says,'your nerves are alive. They're just asleep'," explained David.

Five days later David was walking.

"I was walking on the bar back and forth," he said.

Now David is out of the hospital and on his feet and walking.

David basks in his glory and gives a ray of hope to other hoping to walk again. The 48-year-old former boxer and dancer is taking it in stride, knowing his best days are still ahead.

David's dream is to see his 14-year-old twin daughters grow up and get married so he can walk them down the aisle and have that first dance.

Blancarte's dreams may have to wait. He was arrested Friday (3/13) on an outstanding warrant stemming from a domestic abuse case.

No bull: WSU Vets deliver bull triplets
PULLMAN, Wash. – A Red Angus cow has given birth to rare triplet bull calves at Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Statistically, the odds of living cattle triplets of the same sex being born are about one in 700,000 births.

All three calves were in a breach position and three WSU veterinarians and five students were needed for the delivery on Tuesday. The calves weighed between 36 and 41 pounds apiece. The mother and calves are doing fine.

The calves are being called numbers 1, 2, and 3, based on their delivery order. There has been a suggestion they be named Saint, Patrick and Day to commemorate the holiday of their birth.

Thai fireman in 'spider-man' rescue of autistic boy
BANGKOK (AFP) – A Thai fireman turned superhero when he dressed up as comic-book character Spider-Man to coax a frightened eight-year-old from a balcony, police said Tuesday.

Teachers at a special needs school in Bangkok alerted authorities on Monday when an autistic pupil, scared of attending his first day at school, sat out on the third-floor ledge and refused to come inside, a police sergeant told AFP.

Despite teachers' efforts to beckon the boy inside, he refused to budge until his mother mentioned her son's love of superheroes, prompting fireman Sonchai Yoosabai to take a novel approach to the problem.

The rescuer dashed back to his fire station and made a quick change into a Spider-Man costume before returning to the boy, he said.

"I told him Spider-Man is here to rescue you, no monsters are going to attack you and I told him to walk slowly towards me as running could be dangerous," Somchai told local television.

The young boy immediately stood up and walked into his rescuer's arms, police said.

Somchai said he keeps the Spider-Man costume and an outfit of Japanese television character Ultraman at the station in order to liven up school fire drills.
