First export your character from BGI. Then, move the .CHR file, thats in the Export folder in the BGI main folder, into the 'Import' folder in the BGII main folder. Start a new game in BGII, and press import in the Character screen. Voila!

This comes word for word from the "BG-II Shadows of ahm" Game Manual

BALDUR"S GATE II
In Baldur's Gate II you are able to Import Characters and saved games from Baldur's Gate 1 or from the Expansion pack BG tales of the Sword Coast. Even if you have uninstalled Baldur's Gate 1, you will still be able to access your old saved games and Characters, UNLESS you have manually deleted these files. There will also be pre-made characters that you can use if you do not want to go through character generation. These represent a broad selection of popular character types that the newcomer to the genere will enjoy playing.

I found that the only way you can import more than one of your old team members into a game is to play multiplayer by yourself other wise you will only be able to import your main Character. I would STRONGLY suggest the first time you play only import your main Character and start in the multiplayer mode you will then be able to add the other members later if you really want. Playing in multi-player allows you to add characters any time during the game if you really think you need to but, most of the time you will be happy with who you meet along the way. In order to do the many many quests you will need the AI's that will join up with you and if you bring in your old team you will end up dumping them in order to do all the AI's Quests.

I hope this help's you! I love this game and play all the way through at least once a year so Have fun ! I Will.

I always copy the save game from the BG1 directory to BG2 then import from saved game. The save won't show up otherwise so you can't delete/overwrite it in the game.

I believe importing from a savegame rather than a CHR file has certain advantages/disadvantages - including the re-applying of XP limits from whichever game and allowing the retention of certain item of golden clothing.

Confirmation, please?

I've just imported from the CHR file - XP and pantaloons came over as well.

If you have more than 161000XP (TotSC) or 81000 for BG1 does it re-apply the XP limit for the appropriate game?

BGII doesn't start right were BG1 left off. There are possibly several days or months between them. The opening movie gives a little bit of a summary of what happended up to your capture. The people who captured you removed all your equipment.
