could you be more specific? is he hostile? is the shop keeper by any chance the priestess of Talos?(if so, she will sell the next day) you could also use shadow keeper to give the item and then take away that amount of gold.

Which merchant in particular are you referring to? Then I might be able to be a bit more helpful.

Hehe the same thing happened to me once :( I stole something from some box at cromwells smithy and he didn't react at first but after some time when I went back to him when I had something he was gonna force into an item he justn got hostile to me. So I had to play it from the begining again :(
But this time it goes even better than the last time so I shouldn't complain :D

at waukeens promenade the north side next to a shopkeeper with alot of scrolls
and a scroll case...
