I think it says, either on the spell description or in the manual. I can't have a familiar cos i'm not a mage. Boo hoo:(

Not true. One of the other classes can also cast Find Familiar. It's either the Beast Master ranger kit, or the Avenger/Totemic druid kit, but again, only if the PC takes the class and kit.

Perhaps one of the philosopher pundits at Ironworks can pinpoint the proof to this perplexing problem? ;)

(On my way to grammar class...)

There is a well-known exploit to cast Find Familiar for ANY character class.
Technically "Find Familiar" can only be cast by classes who are able to cast arcane scrolls (i.e. Mage, Sorcerer,...) and it can of course only be cast by your PC.
now if your PC is for example a Barbarian you can still cast the spell like you could cast any other spell. Go to the inventory select a potion* with right-click and select "Drink Potion"**. NOw replace that potion with the scroll you want to cast (e.g. Find Familiar) and exit the inventory. Your Barbarian will cast the spell. You can also use this exploit to cast timestop with a warrior and hack your enemies away or for a lot of other extremely cheesy tactics. Keep in mind though that this IS cheating/cheesing and only partly justified by the additional character dephth you get through interaction with your familiar and the arguing "Why can Minsc have Boo and I can't have the bunny I always wanted?"

* in the backpack NOT in the quickslots
** do not double left-click but select it from the menu once the description pops up

I've never tried using familiars before. But then again there's so much I still need to try in Baldur's Gate 2, but first I want to finish BG1, because I haven't even finished that one. TotSC is next, and then I'll probably import my char from BG1 to BG2

The classes that can get a familiar are:
Beast Master
Mage (and all specialist schools)
Sorceror
Bard (and all kits)
All multiclass mages

With ToB, thieves, their kits, and multiclassed thieves can also get familiars.

I think that's all of them.
