Hey all
This is a weird one; I played through Chapter 1 when the game first came out, then got sidetracked; 6mo or a year later I thought I'd replay to try and be on top of the game... so played thrugh Ch 1 again and got sidetracked And so now, here I am 2 or 3 years later thinking I'm working too much and should finish this game Fortunately, last round I kept my save file... So I load up the game and here I am in the D'something castle with some black shellbug walking guys attacking me. I think I'm supposed to be assembling a flail. Cool. Just need ot figure out how to play and get going again, and figure out what the heck is going on. (How many quests did I start? Am I screwewed, or can I get by without having any notes of how I got here? I have no idea who in the city I got committed to..) Immediately a problem comes up though, and I recall being annoyed by this when I iniitally played (both times) -- what do I do with all my stuff? I simply couldn't find scroll cases at the few stores I came across. So I've got I think 6 characters now (including the one who belongs to the D'something castle), and their backpacks are entirely full of scrolls. What can I do with the scrolls? What do we do with all the stuff we find? Looks like I've been leaving all sorts of 'stuff' behind, which would be better kept or sold or stashed or something; ie: In the room my save is in, theres some crates on the floor and a chets full of goodies, and I can't get any of it some my guys are full of scrolls. (I have one scroll case, but I think its full) I suppose you can drop stuff, but then it goes away after a bit, and of course then you have to come back to get it later and god only knows if thats possible.. What do you guys do? Am I screwed, or shoudl I be able to pick up and get going? I don't think I Want to replay the Ch1 again, for the 3rd time jeff |
Your Journal is your friend. Love your Journal. Look through the "Done Quests" section to see what you don't have to worry about anymore, look through the "Quests" section to see what jobs have been started but not completed, and write notes to yourself in the "User" section so that you can see what map areas you have fully explored, looking for all the places you may have stashed your stuff. Use the 2 purple arrows at the sides of the Journal to look at past Chapters of the game.
Items dropped on the ground will usually vanish in about a day. Stuff placed in containers, though, will keep forever, unless the map itself changes (which I'm not going to go into here). Scroll cases and Gem bags can be bought from various merchants all around town. Just shop around, you'll find some. |
Don't forget to get your mages to learn spells that you think might be useful. A lot of those scrolls can be learned by your mages.

If you're having such a hard time remembering stuff that you did 2-3 years ago in your last saved game, you might want to make a new one. Not only can you start over fresh, but you might have gained new insight from other games you've played that could help you while playing BG2. (Playing Starcraft and other real-time strategy games made such a difference in combat.)
There's also a mod that lets players skip that tedious dungeon with the plot-important loot and other goodies. (You might need to refresh the screen a time or two before the page loads.) |
I suppose you can't toss away scrolls that you know, since they can be used to just fire off a spell without using mana and such, right?
What are containers per se? Can you just bust into empty houses looking for some with chests? OR can you buy chests? What are some ideal storage locations? Given I'm in the D'something castle I'm probbaly out of luck for my guys now.. can I come back through it to pick stuff up, or will the dungeon get cleared when I complete it? I wonder if I can go back up to the city from where I am and stash stuff and buy scroll cases.. I *hate* losing stuff or leaving it behind jeff |
Waaait a minute.
Backing up a little (found another save) I've just gotten Aerie from the circus and killed a dwarf gang off in a pub (Mencar?), so its a good spot to restart perhaps. I think after this I went wandering around and got into Ch2 and the D'something castle trip, etc. So maybe this goes back a nights gaming from a couple years ago.. so maybe a good place to start. Anyway, wandering around the circus tent theres lots of tables that don't seam to be in use. (Up beside the rubble fro the collapsed jail.. top of the screen above the bar and bookkeeper is a sample table). The bookkeeper has a scorll case for 360GP, but my party has only 600 or so, so I can only afford 1, which isn't enough. But can I just fill the table up with my scrolls, and none of them will walk away from me or be swiped by the city denizens? Will I be coming and going from the city, so its a good place to stash goods? Whats some good spots? Thanks for all your help jeff |
Make sure your mages scribe some scrolls!
It's not a bad idea to sell some of them, either. This way you'll have more than a measly 600 gp ;) |
Stash in somewhere in a city area you visit often. Remove all the things stashed in the De'Arnise Hold as fast as you can, if you are a warrior of some sort. The area file will actually change if you accept a quest here later, so all the items stored will disappear.

Yes. For now, you can keep your scrolls in that table.
|
if you promise not to tell anyone ;) i keep my stuff in the promendade either on the table behind the adventurers mart or the wall plaque next to the armourer/fletcher shop - it just seems right to me although being in the middle of a map it's not actually the most convenient
(as you're worrying about it i think it's ok to point out that once you fully complete the quest, by talking to nalia, stuff in d'arnise hold will be lost to you one way or another) |
