I've come across quite a few rings and gems, none of which are magical, and I'm wondering if I should be keeping them or should I just sell them?

Also, I found a 'Protection from Fire' scroll and it was unlike other scrolls that I've found in the 'image' on the parchment has a 'green' image on it; as opposed to the 'white' or 'red' images that are on other scrolls. Anyway, I tried to 'Write Magic' with this scroll but I am unable to. What is the reason for this? Also, what do the different colors on the scrolls represent?

BTW, I'm loving this game. I was up until 2:30 am again last night. My wife wants to kill me! But she can't, because I've got a 'Morning Star +2'---she fears me!

You can sell the gems, there are few that you need in the game, unless you are told. Some, however are needed to start a quest and to up grade an item. (I won't tell you, you may want tofind out for yourself )

As for the spells, the green represents a protection scroll. It can only be used once and cannot be learnt. As for the other spells, red indicates offensive, blue defensive and white neutral, ie some other non-combat related effect such as revealing an area of the map.

Hope this helps.
