I,ve played through with a ranger and an assassan.I prefered playing the ranger but really liked the rouge's thieving and backstab abilities.I know that a ranger(stalker)can backstab to a lesser degree than a thief but he can't find/dissarm traps, pick locks, ect. What i would like to know is can you dual from thief to ranger?

Unfortunately you cannot dual to a subclass. You can dual to a fighter, but not to a kit or a subclass (like ranger).

You can start as a ranger and dual to a thief AFAIK (someone may wish to confirm this).

Rangers are not allowed to dual class.I thought that maybe you could dual if you met the ability reqs of the desired class. Thanks for the info Memnoch, you've saved me the time of putting my theory to practice.

Actually, rangers CAN dual class to cleric. That is the only one allowed.

Acctually, you can dual to a subclass - w/shadowkeeper (ie. fighter dualed to an assasin). However, I have never tried it where the basic class couldn't be dualed (ie. a ranger to anything other than a cleric). (I basically see this as a programing flaw that can be overcome w/ shadow keeper.)

Soon I will prob. do a lengthy article on Shadow Keeper and it uses on the Amn board and ref. it w/ my article on the best bg2 player char..

Remember on "dualing" that you must be 15 in preq. ability of your 1st class (ie. fighter = 15 or more in str), and your next class must have a min. of 17 in its major preq. (ie. Assasin = 17 or more in dex) - remember though that if you dual to a class that has major and minor preq. that you must satisfy both (like druids needing 17 in wis. and a fairly high # in char, but I'm not sure what the # is). You will also need to have the right alignment (ie. druid needs true neutral).

Oh, and welcome to the board!
