Been having some fun electocuting my entire party with Chain Lightning - due to the intended target of this most excellent spell walking towards the spellcaster - as you need to be line of site to fire it off and it has to have a target!!

Thought there must be a better way - try taking your Shadowed thief and getting them to drop off an item right where you would ideally cast the spell. This item then lights up as a valid target for spells suck as Agazz's Scorcher or Chain Lightning.

Things can still go wrong but its less risky than shoving a knife into a working toaster..

I avoid chain - or any other lightening spells - unless it happens to be the only thing I haven't tried on a spell-resistant enemy. I think it is FAR more dangerous to your team than the enemy, no matter how well you target it! HATE the spell, lol! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
Your idea sounds good - but how often do you get the opportunity to do that?

Those lightning wands are great against water elementals that attack from far away.

Agree totally - only really playing with it as a) Characetrs are hard enough in case it backfires b) I like watching to see how it (and all spells work) - don't worry - when it all really hits the fan its back to base spells, and "hit them hard and quick" strategy until the real badies are toast.. then its back to experimenting!

Lightning spells have been blow way out of proportion in these games.
I could not believe that it bounced so many times and you had to save each time when I first played Baldur's Gate. They took one of the most useful spells in
AD&D and made it useless. Except as a trap to kill your party.

maybe so, but i have a feeling if it were me and i could fling lightning irl..LOL..i would definitely be toasting everything around me. think about it. lightning has gotta be one of the least controllable elements. personally, i think that AD&D treated it unrealistically. sure, it's fun and is totally reliable and gets even more so the higher ya go... but naaah! not in the real world.

There was bounce back in AD&D. If the spell encountered an obstruction it bounced right back at the caster. As far as unrealistic? We are talking about magic, in a game. And since we are talking magic what use would it be if it were uncontrollable. Realistically you would be the first thing fried if you could
generate that kind of energy. But like I said what did realism ever have to do with AD&D. It is and always will be a fantasy setting that uses elements of history and fantasy to create an intriguing world for escape.
By the way nice to meet cha. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/hippy.gif
