I know this is on here somewhere , but I can't find it. Can I finish IWD if I go into HOW. Or should I go ahead and finish IWD first? Is it easy to get to HOW from there or do I need to start over?

Yes, it is possible to finish the end battle in IWD if you go off into the HOW areas. To start the HOW series, simply go to Kuldahar and find the hut with Hjollder. Talk to him - that will initiate HOW - IF your characters are all level 9 or higher. When you kill the end boss in HOW the game will teleport you back to Kuldahar so you can resume and finish IWD.

If you finish IWD, it is still possible to play HOW. Just select expansion only, and use the characters that you finished IWD with (IWD will autoexport them for you when you finish IWD).

Okay so if I move on to HOW before finishing IWD can I return to IWD and finish it ? Or do I need to start over?

Yes. HOW will automatically return you to Kuldahar so you can finish IWD, after you kill the end-boss in HOW. (Unless you decided to play HOW in the expansion only mode in which case the game will start and end in HOW.)
