Guys,

I'm up to chapter 5, well Kuldahar anyway.
I am really enjoying this game to the extent that my G/F has claimed I want to "Marry" IWD2, but is it me or is it a bit too linear?.
ie I liked in BG1 and TOSC that you had a lot of freedom to rove overland wherever you wanted to, in BG2 you really have to just go to one pre designated area.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game (don't want to marry it though) but what do you think?.

Yeah, it's very much like the first IWD: basically a straight-ahead, get on with it type of game. Having played the original, I wasn't surprised that this one was the same. Would have liked the chance to do a little exploring myself, though.

If you want a game that provides opportunity for messing around all over the place outside the main plot, try Divine Divinity. I'm doing that now, and my character is up to level 30, which is about where you need to be before continuing with the main line. And I've still got some things to take care of.

IWD 2 is lineear. BUT not as much as IWD1. IWD1 was very boring. You go to town. Then to a dungeon. From town to dungeon. Always! It's a LITTLE BIT differenet in IWD2. You start in a town. You complete some quests and then you encounter new places new towns!its enjoying. I mean it's not alwys the same place where you return. You may return to targos (in chapter 1) wandering willage ice temple underdark kuldahar etc lots of. in iwd there's only one home! kuldahar :( (

one more thing

What's divine divinity??

Divine Divinity is a solo RPG that's been out for awhile now. There are a lot of things to do in it, many more quests than you'll find in IWD2. Like Might & Magic, people will happily wait for you to get things done. So there's no rush, and you can take your time with the game.

I just bought IWD2 today and i really really hope that i dont find it very linear... but im enjoying my first minutes... and about Divine Divinity, i didnt really like it... it reckon its a cross between NWN and Diablo... Too much, i mean too much hack'n'slash could not be good for you... travelling with only one character is very boring sometimes... i experienced that in Diablo, and did not like what i experienced...

Maybe slightly off topic :D

You say that divine divinity is like might and magic, but with one character? In that case does it have better graphics, because I really like M & M, but there is no texture or anything...

Well, I generally prefer the party (my own party!) style of RPG, too. However, a well-done solo game can be fun for me, also. Sorry to say, you will find IWD2 rather a liner production.

Callum, the graphics and music in DD are quite good, and you don't need a high end card (I'm using a 16 meg Voodoo 3 myself). The view is like Diablo, with your character on screen at all times.

a solo rpg? hmm I'll take a look. I know this is a little bit off-topic subject but any other enjoying rpgs like icewind dale 2 these days??

A while back I was having LOTS of fun with "Arcanum". Its not realy all that DnD but its the same kinds of races and weapons except its set in the industrial revolution. So you have Half-Ogre's running around with Axe's fighting Dwarves running around with scoped rifles. Its not as unfair as it sounds. The game needed some work but it was so original that I stuck with it till the end. Fun. I wish the would come out with a sequel in the IE.

Mmmm...can't think of any CRPG's out there right now that are like IWD2. Maybe Neverwinter Nights (haven't played it myself), but you only create one character there, not a party. I do know a friend of mine was having a good time with it, though.
