The default 800x600 is the best to play in. Any more and it would be too small(unless you're playing on a 21") and any less is just too ugly.

the next one after 800x600, i just can't stand the blocky ness of the normal view!

I usually play in 1024 x 768 if I can. I recently bought a 19" LCD Viewsonic 912B with 12 ms response. The detail is great.
