What would be the best choice for a fighter4/clericX?
A spear? Greatsword, axes? Its obvious that you will find on your journey many magical weapons but what would be the most efficient weapon choice? Thanks |
Out of personal preference, I'd go with greataxes, assuming you have 18 STR. Greatswords also work. If you don't have a high STR, you could opt for hammers instead, as there are several hammers that are highly worth it, including throwing hammers.
EDIT: I will add that personally I think spears are rubbish. There are a few good halberds, though. I used a diruption lance for a period of time with my fighter4/cleric, but I didn't see any need to take more than proficient in it. Remember, fighters are proficient with all weapons, so you can easily change as you see fit with no penalty. [ 01-26-2005, 11:30 AM: Message edited by: Marty4 ] |
Have you considered using axes? Tempus clerics have proficiency 2 for free, and with fighter's feats you really won't mind spending another at that. And there are also a few good hammers around.
Just to remind you of some alternatives to blades we've all grown so fond of. |
I always have my cleric use Maces since they get that feat for free (not including Fighter levels). I don't know, when I create a Cleric, I always invision that pic of the blonde holding a mace (think she has a blue top on). And I always give her the voice set that says "A little fire should liven things up a bit" or something like that.

I don't know the name of it, but there's an IMO worth-while spear that banishes undead... (you get it in the fourth chapter I think...) ... It seems very clerick-ish...

'Tis. That would be the Hammer of Lucrene, the halberd that I mentioned above. I read the description, and it was actually made for a warrior cleric who had a lot of brawn and little brain (perfect for my guy! :D ). I wont spoil on its location, and I forget anyway ;)

Axes are by far the best weapon for this game, considering their frequency.
The most efficient (strength-based) weapons in the game are two-handed weapons. As mentioned above, Tempus clerics get 2 axe proficencies for free; if you're into powergaming via playing a fighter4/clericX, dump ability points into str and watch the fun. Note: Magical weapons like Hammer of Lucerne and whatnot sound great, but they're impractical; i.e. abilities are ignored in 99% of gameplay. The real question is: powergamer or character gamer? |
I agree with marty, get greatswords and axes. Greatswords are probaly the best type of weapon in the game Excluding HOW weapons and the greataxe of flame. If you choose greatswords you will get a steady stem of greatswords throughout the whole game, until you get the greataxe of flame.
(In my opinion, its the best wep in the game, becouse of 2D12 damage, note the 2 not one, and the increased chance of criticals, plus fire damg.) Plus if you have 18 str, 2 tymoras loops and the lucky nucky, you will do criticals about 1/2-1/3 of the time, making a VERY powerful fighter. I also agree with marty that spears are rubbish, excluding 1 or 2, they are pretty much all bad. |
What would a spear have to do in order to be considered "powerful" or "useful"? I agree that spears are normally under-valued and/or underused, but the right ability could make spears useful again.

@ Jerry, thanks for the support, though the MGoF doesn't increase criticals
@ Azred, spears cold be good, but I really have never seen a spear with more than +3-4 enchantment. They are okay, but there are no "unique" spears with a high enchantment. Fortunately, there are some good halberds to make the polearm proficiency worthwhile. @Hodmimir, 1. Welcome to IW! . 2. On the Hammer, that is what the 4 weapon slots are for: in my game with a fighter4/cleric, I had him with 1 slot for a greataxe, 1 slot for a throwing axe, 1 slot for a mace+shield, and 1 slot for the Hammer. |
