cant i get a thief above 1 in a weapon skill? is it dependent on class, level, anyone got the comprehensive lowdown on what i can do for weapon skills, my fighter is happily on 4 , but my dwarf fighter who i had at one point despite using a big ole axe got 1 point to spend and couldnt put it into axe, would only let him put it into other weapons he didnt want, and he was only 1 in axe to start with, surely i could put 4 in axe?? i dont get it, plus last and only time i ever played ad&d was about 15 years ago so im not too up on the extra bits

If I am not mistaking everybody gets stuck with two proficiency slots per weapon except for straight fighters who can get to high mastery (*****) and mages who only get one (*) per weapon.

Straight Theives, Clerics, Mages, Bards only get (*) for there weapons. If they are multi classed with some type of fighter they get (**). Straight fighters can get (*****), and Rangers and Palidins get (**). So yes it is dependent on class.

so why couldnt my fighter get above 1 in axe till about level 5? where my human fighter made 2 on his 2nd or 3rd level? it would let me put points into anything else but axe which already had one in it, very annoying, still i dumped the dwarf gimp a while ago and went with xan instead, least im not worried about his weapon proficiency overly much with his nice sword.

That really sounds like a bug! If you have a fighter he should be able to spend the extra points available on the ax.

The only "bugs that are not bugs" about weapon proficiencies in BG1 are as follows:
1) When making a pure-classed Fighter, you can only put a maximum of 2 weapon stars into any one weapon. BioWare nerfed the rules a bit to prevent you from reaching Grandmastery (*****) in a weapon.
2) If you Dual-class a Fighter into another class, and then regain your Fighter class, you should be able to "stack" weapon stars earned in your 2nd class on top of stars earned in your Fighter class. This is not the case in BG1, as again, BioWare nerfed the rules a bit to prevent you from reaching Grandmastery.

Both of these "nerfisms" are fixed in BG2, although Grandmastery itself is not--it's a little bit less powerful than the D&D books say it should be. Annoyed at the way BioWare watered down the pure-class Fighters, somebody made the Grandmastery Patch, which corrects this deficiency.

Just change them to the way you wanted to place them using Gatekeeper. I wouldn't let the deficiencies of the game stop you there.

i try and avoid using editors on it where possible, if i cant hit 5 due to the game not allowing it then fair enough, my guy is hard enough any way with thac0 of 5 and ac-9
