It has been determined that the best way to go down ladders, is to stand beside it, use the left or right arrow keys, to approach the ladder from the side, look down, then fall down the ladder and go splat.

(To paraphase the wise posters on this site.)

To climb UP a ladder, approach it straight on, have your characters look UP slightly and then use the forward key to move up the ladder.

AND to go down the ladder (if you have enough time and really want to mess with it, just to say that you can do it...)

Position yourself over where the ladder starts (at the top. Look down (between your hypothetical legs) and walk backward slowly until you start to fall. Bring your view upward slightly to where it catches, but you keep your downward momentum. Lower yourself down gently, and then walk away from the ladder at the bottom.

Mind you, it takes a heck of a lot of patience to master. Most people, after they get HP up, just prefer to go "SPLAT!" Someone needs to set up a Gael Serran Sports Medicine Clinic for all those sprains and turned ankles and such...

I haven't had as much trouble going up or down as I have had in getting off on an upper level (like the second floor of the windmill) then I to go !!!splat!!! with the best of em.
