Okay, perhaps I was TOO fast:
I went into the area "behind" the kerah statue, flattening skeletons as they came. Shortly after, I encountered the Warrior's Spitir and the Mage's Spirit, killing (or returning them to eternal sleep? *g*) as well. I picked up their crystals and went into the room with the burning altair and these high steps, which promptly folded themself down as I entered. So I turned around and entered the other altair room and the same happened. So there I am, with no way to get up to these altair(s) and nothing I can do lets me open these damned doors towards either the wizards or the warriors path.

QUESTION: are there any ways to "reset" the stairs (except starting over?)

If all else fails, you can also "jump" (0 on the numeric keypad) up to the altar with your most agile character and grab the jindol from the flames.

Did you manage to get one of the stairs to reappear by using a crystal?? You can, should you want, actually do both paths but I never really found it worth the effort. Keep us posted on how you are doing!!
