If you've got the BG original saga and the expansion pack TotSC, here's what you do:
Open your Baldur's Gate folder wherever you saved it. (Probably under Programs\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate) and look for a file called MCONFIG.exe. This will cause the map of your saved game to get updated to show the new expansion pack areas. If you don't run this file, you won't be able to re-enter Ulgoth's Beard. Run it. Find the saved game that you want to update in your Save folder. The program won't tell you that it worked or not, but it will work if you've done everything right.
Load BG. Under the "single player" menu, select "mission pack." This will cause the saved game you select to automatically start in Ulgoth's Beard. (You can do this before running mconfig.exe, but if you leave Ulgoth's Beard, you won't be able to return because the map doesn't and will not show up until you run mconfig.exe.)
I used the final save I made with each of my parties right before the last big battle of BG. Gave me a decent start out in the new expansion pack areas, and I suggest that you don't start with anything less.
EDIT: This is assuming that you do indeed have the expansion pack. If your copy of Baldur's Gate says nothing about Tales of the Sword Coast, you don't have the expansion pack. There's no getting to Ulgoth's Beard unless you've got the expansion pack (TotSC).
