I was following one of the unlimited gold hints and using just 2 of my characters and when I left the Inn for the first time to go out of town as the hint suggests, I pressed escape when Gareth appeared so I wouldn't have to sit thru his speech. Now, after getting all the gold, when I leave the Inn there is no Gareth and none of my characters have any record of any conversation with him in the journals! Will this effect game play? Should I start over? Can I reset the game and find Gareth this time? Tia for the help.

You probably will be able to play through the game just fine BUT what I would recommend is that you play for a while, getting some experience and the feel of the game, level up a few times and then save your game and reset the adventures to start over. You'll still have your same characters/level/experience. The only items that go missing when you reset are quest items so you should be fine!!
