It seems like there are more complaints about NWN as the game deserves. This is a great game I think has a good chance to go for Game of the Year. Bioware is on top of things already fixed the problem with the game crashing patch on the first day of release. With that said I spoke to a few friends of mine, mostly online buddies in which I used to MUD (text based similar to that of MMORPGs such as Everquest etc.) with. Most of them like the game, but they also tell me that they been hearing a lot of complaints about the game so I did a little thinking. There are a few reasons why people slam this game.

1. They are too used to the 2nd Edition AD&D rule set and dislike the 3rd Edition rules.

2. Not all RPGs are for everyone, They listen to reviews and the hype that NWN and immediately buy it without knowing what they are getting into. It's good depending on taste, a friend of mine who is so into FPS games like CS don't care for any game including NWN, morrowind, BG etc. (I'm sure when he plays it he'll change his mind.) Someone yet who is very much into 1st person/3rd person advenurer like Morrowind rather play that than NWN or BG as another example. If you like or played any of the BG series, IWD or planescape, and love AD&D ruleset or faerun, then NWN is a garantee for those players. It all relative and dependant on taste of each individual and the genre of the game.

3. The game seemed buggy to someone because it crashes on them every 30 mins is because they don't read the what is supported and turn everything up on the game configuration menu. Getting upset about it and deemed the game as garbage and waste of money.

4. Buying the game without knowing their system. 3DFX is no longer in business; although some Voodoo 5 cards may work occasionally they are no longer supported by 3DFX and available drivers do not generally include complete OpenGL support required for Neverwinter Nights. Hence, 3DFX graphics cards are not supported by NWN.

Bottomline is that a good game depends on taste of what each person is into, someone is into sports game might as well invest on a PS2 rather than play PC games like Quake3, NWN, Civilization etc. A great game captures a larger group of audiance with game play features, graphics, music etc. Just like the classic that was Baldur's gate, Tony Hawks, Gran theft Auto, Quake series etc. I hope these minor flaws which is more of human error does not sink this game. NWN should be a classic game otherwise.

I haven't been playing much yet, but I think it's awesome so far. I only have one tiny complaint. I have a ranger with two rapiers. When I hit f2 to switch to my bow, that's no problem. Then I hit f3 to return to my swords, but it only equips my "good" hand, leaving the 2nd sword sitting in inventory, so I have to equip it manually. Not a moajor problem, just a bit annoying in the middle of combat to have to dig through my inventory to get it.

are you setting up the hot key for dual wield?
to do so first drag your main weapon into the hotkey slot. They drag your off hand weapon into the same slot. It should make it dual wield then. It has been working for me that way. So much easier to go from bow to swords. Also works for sword and shield.

Excellent!
Thanks much. I guess I missed that in the manual (skimmed over it in a hurry to play)

Actually, I do have one other minor complaint: the fact that according to the manual (I haven't tried it yet) if you die, you just reappear at the nearest temple. Bah. Dead characters should stay dead unless someone is there to resurrect them. I hope that in MP, the DM will have control over this. I have always found in pnp that if the character isn't occasionally afraid that his character will die, a great deal of roleplaying potential is lost. How can you ever feel involved if you know your character can't die? Some of the best stories we've done concern the aftermath of a character's death (if they can't be brought back).

The module creator decides how to handle dead characters, this is done in the toolset. The bioware campaign has immediate death on hitting 0 (which isn't true to 3ED, but it's single player, who will heal you?) but through the toolset you can change this. There are also options to not allow respawning so if your party members feel like it, they can leave your corpse on the ground and walk away. This is the beauty of the toolset.

Tried to play multi last night and it was frustrating. The game itself is great but there are too many people on the servers trying to recreate their D2 experience and it gets annoying...especially when they start whining about no 24/7 vault and the ease of cheating.

That's my only complaint so far.

I'm sure I'd be very happy with the game if I could get it to work. The copy protection makes it so that it won't play on my brand new computer, with all the bells and whistles that come with a gaming machine. 'Sigh'. I've been waiting it seems like forever for this game, and am pretty upset that I can't play a game I bought with my hard earned money.
