just started the game again after purchasing the expansion. I've always run goodie goodie characters and wanted to try the other side for once, so I rolled a blackguard (well rogue1/fighter6 then BG)...

Finished almost all of Pre-Luskan chapter 2 this weekend, and I have but one question...

WHAT IN GOD'S NAME WERE THEY THINKING WHEN THEY PUT BROTHER TORAS IN?

I tried a series of combos (me and cleric, me and rogue, me and monk, me and cleric and undead buddy...) and ultimately all failed miserably.

I later find that he is a CR27 Lich.

WTF?

Why bother putting him in a zone where your character basically caps at level 11 or so?

Even a good PC group of 8 would likely get their collective butts worked by him.

What's the point?

He's tough but doable. Helps to have spell resistance and (especially) high saving throws. Throw caution to the wind, and use all of your buffing/healing potions that you have. Dispatch his minions as quickly as possible, then get into melee range with the big guy. The two times I beat him I played a cleric (easiest of all, just cast Spell Resistance, then turned away all of his minions, then went into melee with him), and a fighter (tougher, hacked through his minions as quickly as possible then closed into melee). With an arcane spellcaster or druid, your best bet is to use your area effects to dispatch the minions as quickly as possible, then keep a summon/henchman in melee against him at all times, taking down his defenses as much as possible.

Oh, and stay spread out (have the henchman/summons attack nearest or stand your ground, then move well away from them). This will stop him from using area effect spells as much.

i sometimes wonder about these games, when the makers are trying so hard to make the game difficult to complete they take the fun out of it. an easy trap to fall into especially for mod makers who want people to think their character can do a particularly hard mod they made.

i'd prefer to have fun anyday
