OK, I find this do-hickey on the upper levels and I want to use it.

On the bottom level of Blackstaff's tower there is a dungeon cell with a Umber Hulk, a Stirge and some sort of Intelect Devourer. They attack as soon as I approach the door, putting me in combat mode. The cell door is locked (DC 32). I have a point in Open Locks plus another two for dexterity and a variety of lockpicks which means I need a roll of 19-20 to open the door. (1 (skill) + 2 (Dex)+ 10 (lockpicks) + roll (19-20)= 32-33)

I thought I could save a lot of lockpicks if I can figure how to use this magical chime. I right click on it to get the radial menu; then click USE and get a targetting pointer; and try to target the door but it does not highlight. The only thing I can target is myself. Does anyone know how to use this item?

TIA

The best way to use items like this is to quickslot them, and use them while your inventory is closed. However, to use it while the inventory is open, click on yourself with the targeting cursor.
Edit: Great, my avatar changed, and now all the Undermountain fans are gonna be hunting me, thinking I'm Ol' Red...

HEHEHE! Pay no attention to the bow and fancy arrows, Mr. Red...err.. Bard. :D

I never could get the chimes to work, even when using them properly. Do they actually open things?

What! Me! Kill dragons! Protected species and all that.

(Walks away whistling towards weapon shop).

The chime will work, on lower DC's. I think it casts the spell knock at like lvl 3. The spell description in the book isn't very descriptive, but I think a lock with DC of like 25 or so will be beyond it's capabilities. Not real clear on that however, as spell casters still aren't my forte.
I'm gonna need a lot of belts...

Hehe, I usually just bring a thief...err.. someone with special borrowing talents along to help my ladies get into problematic chests and such. ;) Hubby's characters usually take a few lockpick points since I usally want to open everything in sight! :D

You can't find anything, if you don't open everything...
