Since a couple of people have mentioned sci-fi, I thought I'd put in a recommendation for Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy. It's one of the most awesome, sweeping epics I've ever read. Anyone else read it?

Not yet, but it is on my list of things to read if I ever finish my degree and actually have some free time!
My studies have ground to a halt at the moment due to lack of light in my study (wiring problem) and the fact that I am addicted to this board! (ie. lack of motivation after 4 years of working full time during the day and studying at night and weekends! I'm burnt out! Just... keep... going... 2... more... months..... aaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggghhh!)

I look forward to reading other people's comments on the series here to give me some idea of what to expect.
