Has anyone noticed the similarities between Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Salvatores "In sylvan shadows" (book 2 of cleric quintet).
Example number 1: Elbereth, the Elvish prince, is actually in Tolkien's poem when they meet the elves in teh Fellowhip of the ring, chapter "Three is company" Example number 2: In the same book, the awakening of the trees to kill off the invaders was blatantly ripping off the ents in the two towers. Example number 3: Galandell? Galadriel? sound similar? And remember the fact that by reading the lord of the rings, it got him started on the road to fantasy, (it made him change his degree to journalism from computer science) What do YOU think about these startling facts? |
I wouldn't say that it is a blatant rip-off, but the influence is definitely there. I would argue, though, that every fantasy writer since The Lord of the Rings was first published has been influenced by Tolkien.
You'll find that Cadderly is another "uber" or "cheese" character, just like Drizzt is. |
For a more subtle rip off have a look at the Eye of the World, I think thats what its called anyway. The first Wheel of time book by Robert Jordan. Just dont read past the fifth book.

The entire cleric quintet reeked of stupidity, from the dwarf wanting to be a druid (it's called 3rd edtition people), to the cleric that had as much "moral dilemna" as a person wanting to eat a pie or a cake. The monk was also annoying as hell, she had no problems with anything, and she basically acted like some little princess with martial arts. Instead of a cool monk, we got a stupid one. For shame salvatore. For shame. BTW, anyone see the blatant star trek ripoff? hint. It has to do with cadderly...and his father....

don't you mean Star Wars?

If i recall his bio correctly, LOTR was what got Salvatore into fantasy in the first place, he first recieved the book as a christmas present in his sophomore year. So he is probably infuenced alot by Tolkien. If you've read David Eddings for example (another Tolkien fan) you may notice his prose (especially during the battles) is similar to Tolkien's.

all roads lead to tolkien, thats why hes the man !
|
I didn't really like Cleric's Quintent at all really.
|
LoTR was the earliest is it? then the rest that come out later might be influence in what tolkien have wrote.
