First off who has read this brilliant book and what did u think of it?

I know it has been out for years but I was recommended it a couple of weeks ago and I found it a brilliant book.

I was basically wondering if there happened to be a second book to it? I kind of doubt there is although I hope there is, as the end of the story does very briefly round the book off. Thats the only thing I didnt enjoy about the book, I felt it could have been a lot longer, the last 50 pages really dont go into much detail in contrast with the rest of the book.

I read the book a couple of times Ross and loved it. He has another book called Chocky (sp) that i thought was way better but if it stands up to be read as an adult i dont know, I only read it as a teenager.

The book chocky is about a young kid who has either an imaginary friend or is being talked too telapathicly by a alien. I will reccomend you give it a go

4 stars **** :D

There is an absolutely terrible "sequel" by Simon Clark called "Night of the Triffids" - avoid it like the plague.

However, if you like John Wyndhan, I would recommend "The Midwich Cuckoos", "The Kraken Wakes" and above all, "The Chrysalids"

I might have given chocky more but it was a long time ago i'm 39 now and something that was fresh then may be cliched now. But at the time it blew me away

Thanks for the rating Wellard. I would probably give Day of the Triffids 3 *s aswell. It was very good for the first 200 pages or so but then it finished to quickly for me. I like books to be at least 600+ pages, oreferably more.

I loved the Book heaps, even though we had to read it in school, but then I saw the movie they made, and now when I hear the word "triffid" I shudder disgust.

yeh Ive heard the movie is really bad. Ive just started reading another one of his books, "the Kraken Wakes" and Ive also ordered "the Midwich Cukoos" so Il see if this author is really good, consistant or not.

Good on you - just don't forget The Chrysalids as well

The only thing to remember is that these books are about 50 years old now and some of the ideas they are based on have been overtaken by events. They are good examples of a sort of subgenre of science fiction often (unkindly) labelled "Cosy Catastrophe". The Death of Grass by John Christopher or Greybeard by Brian Aldiss are other examples of this type of novel. For the equivalent by a US author, The Earth Abides by George R. Stewart would be worth tracking down (if you could find a copy)

Btw, I would have thought that Waterstones or Ottakers would have stocked enough John Wyndham to save you the hassle of ordering.

I didnt order them from those places, havent been into town for a couple of weeks, Im going in on Monday though so Il probably end up buying them then. (I orddered them from the library!)

Also I have also heard that Chrysalids is good, is it better than the Midwich Cukoos? Im gona get them both, oh and btw so far The Kraken Wakes is OK from the 25 pages Ive read, its a very weird layed out book though, no chapters, just 3 phrases in the whole book!
