Saw this movie a few days ago at a friend's house. Excellent film. After watching it, and lking it, my friend openned upon me an interesting fact. Kinda hard to believe it's all based on a true story.

If you liked the movie, you should try reading the book.
The late Dr. Thompson had a way with words. He and Tom Wolfe really invented the new journalism, or as he called it, "gonzo journalism". For those that don't know, Hunter S. Thompson committed suicide a week ago on Feb. the 21st. -manikus |
Yeah, Fear and Loathing is cracking.
This is bat country! I've watched it a dozen times and I've still not tired of it, Johnny Depp is amazing in this film. |
Johnny Depp was in this? I didn't recognize him, which character was he?
"Would you like a beer?" "No" "How about some ether?" |
Johnny Depp played Hunter S. Thompson alter ego Raoul Duke. Raoul Duke Is a reporter and his 'Gonzo' attorney sidekick are suposed to be covering a motorbike race but just outside Las Vegas the drugs start to kick in .... Mescaline anyone? :D
The book is great the film is just good |
I read this when it was serialized in Rolling Stone. It was awesome for its time. All in all, I think that the Dunesberry ongoing parody was much better than Hunter S. in real life.

Moving Carpet, very, very bad.

That is one cartoon series that is hard for me to follow. |
I loathed this movie. And, that's coming from someone who did his fair share of drugs. The acting was fine (by Depp and Del Toro), given the script's limitations. I haven't read the book, but if this adaptation is true to it, I have little desire to read it.
As for Hunter S. Thompson, I have little regard for him. Especially in taking his own life. Real people should outgrow this crap. He did not, and he kept abusing substances until his dying days. And, not in a good way. Timothy Leary took several grams of coke a day and several hits of acid a day until his dying days, but he wrote cogent yet spiritual interesting essays and articles all the while (God knows how). Thompson, on the other hand, would get screwed up, booze it up, whore it up, and just waste a bunch of time and energy, and then sit down and record all the craziness around him at the last minute to get a story done. In my opinion, Gonzo Journalism is an affair that should be left to the muppets amongst us -- and Hunter is not one of them. I am. :D See my portrait of reference, below. :D |
