Can you take, say a bard, early on change to a fighter and get the beserk skill, then change back to a bard and have a bard that can beserk?

no. i dont like the way they did the multiclassing. you can only use the features/items of the class you are in currantly.

(skills being special things like berserk and turning undead)

you can use the skills you have practiced but they will never increase.

ie. if you have a 10th bard with music 50 and you switch to gadgeteer you cannot use any instrument because your not a bard. (all instruments requre a certain bard level) even though it says in your character discription that you are a bard. i dont like it as it basically makes you NOT multi-class. except for early on in the game.

i know they did it to stop the super multi-classing in wiz 7 but i wish they would have given you the option of putting two points into a skill you USED to know to get a total of one point increase. That would have made multi-classing worth it. Also if you once were a particular class you should be able to use its items if you meet the lvl requirements. Sure that would lead to people trying to make uber characters, but honestly going straight with just a little bit of multiclassing would be more powerful...

ah well dont want to take the time to rant more about what else would have to be done to maintain play balance if my above changes were to be implemented.
