Is DS level proportional to yours? I was level 24-26 when he kicked the bucket and he was level 38.

Yeah, the levels seem strangely distributed, the ghost of the father of all thieves was also level 38, but I beat him with a level 15 party twice (I reloaded because in the first run I tried to use skeleton powder, a certain robot fumbled and so got my bishop unhappy :( ), and both times it was easy...
