Is it possible? I have tried but seem to be unable to make it work. The spell seems to cast, but then I am not able to switch out the cursed weapon.

Am I doing something wrong, or is it only possible to do this switch out of combat?

You can uncurse items by letting the "uncurser" (I guess you got a bishop...)equip, then uncurse the person you want to. Well, the only thing you have to do then is not to exit the equit screen and then change to the character you just uncursed. If you also let him equip, then he might get rid of cursed items, otherwise it's just possible to switch weapons, which may be what you want to do...
