while game play, disc #3 develuped a crack in it.
while game play, the disc shattered/exploded in the cd-rom
drive. ouch!

I have gotten almost all the disc fragments out, but the drive
still makes a "buzzz" during re-boot. should i live with the buzz
or should i just have the drive replaced?

Take out the drive. Carefully remove the top cover, and gently but firmly shake it upside down. Only parts that don't belong should fall out. (do this over a clean surface, so you can see what comes out). If it still buzzes, I would replace it, a new CD drive is like 35 bucks online for a decent one.

Was it LGx52? They tend to blow cd up... happened to a friend of mine. Scary, 'cause I have that model, too.
