It probably depends on initiative, speed, samurai level encumbrance and current stamina.

Regarding the ivory blade, have you checked his weapon inventory just in case it may be there? Use the weapon filter button and see what he has. It's very strange that he wouldn't tell you if you've given him all the items he needs and enough time has passed.

For info about Sam's and Lightning Strike:

It's actually still on the first page if the link doesn't go..."Samurai again?" is the title.

I think its skill and level based just like the Ranger's critical ability. (read the description of both classes.)

For Ranger's its Ranged Comabt and Class Level

No doubt that for a Sam. its Close Combat and Class Level.

Obviously though other things factor as mentioned (initiative, weight, opponent level, etc.)

I wouldn't bother trying to "pump" either an attribute or a skill to get it to work more often - its not worth it. (Close Combat should develop nicely on its own.) Note however that Stamina does severly effect the "effectiveness" of the ability, (not to get more lighting strikes BUT instead to get more hits per lightning strike). (I've tested this with pure sam.s vs. fighter w/ a few sam. levels.. WHEN the fighter/sam. makes a lightning strike that character will hit more often during the lightning strike than the pure sam. with nearly equal skill and attribut levels against similar opponents.)

I don't know, ScottG. Some Sams barely ever get a lightning in my games and some get alot. I have had better luck with spreading skills between speed, strength and dexterity with some vitality. Vitality may help more than given credit for. Close combat should be accented by putting them up front as a primary fighter, but don't most parties do this? Class level doesn't seem to be a primary factor, although it does make some difference. My best Sams start getting LS around lev 7 or 8 and take them up into lev 20+. And I don't go for the lightest armor, although I don't use the heaviest either (about 40-45% capacity?). Perhaps one can judge when to give up on a Sam and switch to something else if you have had no more than a Lightning Strike or two before lev 12. Whatever.

Edit: I will add that for most fighter-types I go for strength and speed first, and for swords I have gone for speed and dexterity first. Neither of these strategies seems to work well for a Sam overall for crit and LS.

I've tried them both ways (even attribute spread first and latter with concentrated attributes) - didn't seem to make much difference eitherway, I still received very few (though sometimes in succesive attacks). I've noticed getting LS's more frequently as class level increases, but not much more frequently (and it could have been totally related to an increasing close combat skill, not on the class level per se - in fact it may well be this for the Ranger as well?)

Now I will say that the even attribute character was getting more criticals, but that could have been strictly do to the critical skill being higher, (don't remember if it was or was not though). (And I have tested this skill extensivly - an increased senses attribute does absolutely nothing for increased criticals.. it does however increase the critical skill more quickly.)

ahhh. since release day, the ongoing debate about how to get Lightning Strikes continues.
it's like the "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?" debate. we'll never know.

Here is an interesting LS anecdote that just happened. My party is lvl 7. Walking back to the Monastery, I face lvl 8 plants, which are "Strong". Up to this point, my sammy has done probably total 3-5 LS.

The plants put 4 of my chars to sleep. Then, my sammy procedes to perform 4 lightning strikes in 5 rounds!!! May have saved me from a death.

Wonder if this is just a case of that bad random number generator or if he rose to the occasion. I know my only 2 throwing ninjas seemed to get max dmg very often against higher lvl enemies.

* Hobbit Samurai
* 82 dex/spd, ~57 sen
* 47 sword, ~42 crit skill
* regular katana

I stopped playing Wiz8 for a while and it has sucked me back in.
