Which does everyone find more effective...........
Using a shield or having axsecond weapon?
Also is just using 1 weapon and putting lots of points on single weapon fighting style worth it?

I usually either have one dualwielder and one sword-and-shielder, or I have Jaheira swap between the two, depending on whether she needs the extra AC or not. Also, twohanded weapons are often very good (for Jaheira, the spear of impaling http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/FRblush.gif or the Staff of Arundel/Woodlands)

I use neither for my pc and only ever a shield sometimes for those using slings. I don't like dual weapon wielding personally as I don't think it's very realistic. Assigning a point to single weapon proficiency increases AC and reduces the critical hit roll.

Personal preferences only, I'm not saying A is better than B.

I always carry a weapon in one hand and a shield in the other.

Have one of each. The one with the Shield (and better AC presumably) takes the main attacks, and the chop-o-matic hits the enemy's flanks while they're occupied
