you ditch them for a regular SP char

They are gone for good, you need to import via multi-player if you want them back.

Whenever you start a new multi-player game, or load a multi-player game, on the character screen (the one where it shows the portraits of your party members and you have to click the "check mark") you can delete character and import different character (by clicking on the character's name box, whether he/she is PC or NPC) before the game actually loads.
