Are they any good...

Accord 03-29-2001 02:42 AM

I mainly use them for hitpoints boosting, some of them are good pick pocketers, some are useful scouts, but I usually have them inside my backpack.

I agree they are mostly in the backpack.
Does the bonus to hitpoints come when it in the backpack?

Accord 03-29-2001 03:25 AM

Yes, the bonus to hitpoint comes as soon as you cast the familiar. But be warned, when the familiar dies, you will lose the bonus hitpoint PLUS 1 point of CON. Hence it is safer to keep it out of reach from hostiles.

I have lost to 3 familiars, but my mage is imported of BGI, so have 17 CON.

Technicly it's better to do Bg1 with a mage, because of the books that give you the bonnus attributes. My Lawful Neutral half-elf Conjuror had an int of 19, so he could learn as many spells has he wanted, I got my spell book almost filled to the brink.

If In use him in throne of Bhall he is going to be one heck of a conjuror. Conjuring up all kinds of creatures to defend himself, It's gonna be great!

Back on the subject of familiars, I have found Lawfull Evil gives the best Familiar. It give an Imp with the spell "Polymorph Self" so it can be good at the start of the game!

I find that using a familiar as a scout works pretty good. They are a little faster than the general party (unless the party has boots of speed on or haste or something) and can spot the enemy and run from them pretty good if needed. Other than that, I view them as a pet and keep them in the backpack. I let them out every once in awhile to let them stretch their legs. Make sure that you pocket the familiar before leaving scenes though, cause I did that one time and never saw him again. Poor little Pseudo-Dragon.

I love to use them as scouts, and sometimes in a bad situation to fight with too. But that is a last resort!
