How do you climb up and down ladders???? What am I missing?

I'm not sure if you play First Person Shooters, but the ladders in those games have the same problem. Going up is fine, but trying to get back down usually results in a skydive. Something that could easily be fixed I'd think, but apparantly its impossible, heh.
