This is for a wizard guild task, how (other than by killing the gypsies) can the orb be attained?

Can it be stolen?

You need the serpent wand which you will get from the serpent temple on map 2. To get the quest from the gypsy ask her about "orb of clarity". If you havent been to map 2 (Ishad n'ha) yet then you can store this quest till then.
