I am in the serpent temple, got in the back entrance. I have not yet been given a quest for it, I'm just checking it out. I read that one of the doors after the mage will allow me to exit the front door of the temple. Where do I go from the serpent statue that gives you incense cones?

If you're facing the incense statue you should head off to your left. If I recall correctly, that should take you down a ramp to a large room - the front exit to the temple is in there.
