As I have said in a previous post I am not yet finished the game, what i want to know is will I ever have acess to level 9 mage spells? I have Aerie and Edwin who are both on level 7 spells and i have just come back from Ust Natha and I noticed that Ribald has some pretty powerful spells available in his *special* selection. So I was wondering if I should copy them or just use them in scroll form?

You will if your mages have an 18 intelligence, even if only temporarily from potions, and they have reached 18th level. You may scribe 9th level spells at any time, of course.

Azred, I'm using Level 9 spells from Imoen whose Int is only 17. I never noticed a need for high Int wrt/ anything other than scribing success percentile.

Even Jan and Aerie got to cast them (eventually).

IIRC with SOA a mage with only 17int can only use level up to level 7 spells.

With TOB this limit has been removed, which allows any mage to use level 9 spells.

Noober.

Oh, well, then...that explains it. Anyway, scribe everything you can as soon as you can. The higher you can push your mages' intelligence scores the more spells they may have scribed per level.

Sad thing is: The max. level for a mage is 17 in SoA.
So if you don't have ToB or an XP-cap remover installed you won't have access to lvl 9 spells (unless you read them directly from the scroll).

That's not sad, that's economic incentive! :D

Buy ToB, buy ToB, buy ToB, buy ToB, buy ToB, buy ToB...

Gawd dangit....

I guess from reading posts that said lvl 9 spells can get cast from the book, I went ahead and memmed two freedom spells for Aerie and Immy( thinking one day they will be able to cast em from the book). I should have known. Too many times I've seen varying replies to this same topic. Too few times has the information pertained to SOA ALONE. This is way misleading. I understand the help but I think ppl overlook the fact that not everyone is going to remove the cap nor has TOB.

I'm almost lost again since I know what the AD&D rules say. BUT, I know that the game rules aren't always the same as the standard D&D rules. Can I get some clarity on this? Let's talk about a mage in SOA alone with how SOA works opposed to D&D rules.( one example of contradiction is the backstabbing with blunt weapons thieves get in SOA)

All LVL caps for mages(in SOA) are at lvl 17...k got it. Int affects amount of spells available to cast per lvl. Int affects the lvl of spells you can learn. We know potions boost up int for scribing purposes. This doesn't guarantee you will have those spells open because of the exp lvl cap....k got it.

Questions:

Edwin - conjurer 18 int(high), can he mem all spells of every school? What are his restrictions? At lvl 17, what lvl spell can he cast from the book? 18 INT should be high enough to cast level 9 spells but do lvl 9 spells open up at lvl 18 or higher and how many?
( I've never played around with specialist mages long enough to figure out what they can't scribe or can or if at all)

Aerie - mage 16 int(mediocre), What lvl spells will she have access to once she hits her cap? Lvl 8 spells? How many considering the lvl 17 exp cap?

Imoen - mage 17 int ( mediocre), Same questions.

I'll probably hit shadowkeeper to make dummy mage characters to see how many slots are open in the spell book once the cap is met. Is there a chart on this somewhere, and does it follow strictly with AD&D rules? If so, then I know where to look.

Oh, and I know lvl 9 spells aren't needed to beat the game with, but there's always ambiguity relating to this topic.

ToB on eBay goes for about $15.

oldbittercraig 02-27-2002 06:58 PM

Despite his intelligence, Edwin CANNOT learn/cast all spells... he specialized in one school of magic, so he is incapable of using spells of the opposite school (I forget which offhand).

By that same token, Jan, a specialist in the Illusion school, cannot cast necromancy spells.
