When you find a socketed weapon. Just pick up the ruby or other gem by clicking on it, and then clicking on the socketed weapon with it.

but the item you are inserting it into cannaot be equipped. You can socket runes and jewels that you find too.
|
Socketing as I remember it:
Gems and Skulls can be placed inside socketed items - either weapons, shields or helms. The quality of the gem is important. But flawless and perfect gems are incredibly rare. Gems can be upgraded with the Horadric Cube - three identical gems = one gem of the next quality and the same colour. Gems *cannot* be removed once socketed - so you cant have three perfect rubies and them switch them with saphires when fighting cold-using enemies. Although 3-socket swords arent *that* rare. More important you cant put 2 perfect and one flawed and them replace the flawed later. |
Also, there's not much of a point in saving gems for a later upgrade if that means surrendering space you need. By the time you've finally found enough chipped rubies to make one flawless ruby, you'll have found two perfect ones already...

Actually... I keep all the Gems I can lay my hands on, except for the period between Normal Act 1-2, when I do not have a Horadic Cube yet.
For Normal Act 1-2, I just keep 6 chipped versions of each gem. This way, I have buttloads of Perfect Gems by Normal Act 4. So much in fact, I am enjoying it. :D |

During Normal Act 3-4, you get a chance to find flawed and normal gems. Mephisto and Diablo naturally gives better gems. The Hellforge quest gives a lot of good gems too. Act 5 is where you really start hitting it. You can find flawed, normal and flawless gems here. Eventually, you will be able to get several perfect gems. I use Perfect Diamonds for shields of course, for the Resists to All modifier. PEmeralds I use for crafting safety recipes, especially the ring recipe. PAmethysts I use for crafting caster recipes, usually the mask recipe. PRubies I use for crafting blood recipes, usually the light plated boots recipe, or the plate mail recipe. PSapphires I use to socket in my mercernaries' weapons. Just one, for the chill effect and the chance to shatter the target's corpse. Also used for the hit power recipes, just the chain glove recipe. PTopazes I use for socketing in helms and/or armour for the magic find bonuses. PSkulls I use for socketing in helms and/or armour for the life/mana regeneration. Sometimes in weapons too, for my melee characters and bowazons. |
Actually, it would only take 3^4 chipped gems, so only 81, not 243.

Well those chipped gems are more needed nowadays than higher class gems because of that 3 chipped gems + 1 magical sword = 1 magical sword with random mods. It is for that elusive CCBoQ... haaay... that I am looking for :D
