We all know the philosophical question if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there does it make sound? Ok but now if no one is logged on into IW...do the smileys still animate?

We need a couple of mysterious monks to solve this one, summon a group of computer understanding mysterious monks, about 42. Yes bring an armadillo too, wearing a red hat if possible. I'll have your answer soon enough.

And don't forget to bring the yellow painted consecrated garden marrow of computing technology.

Possibly this is better phrased as "Are smilies seperate entities or do they require human interaction to exist". So, do smilies have consciousness?

We can define consciousness as ... blah blah blah... bah! Why am I typing this!

What are smilies in an infinite universe! They are nothing... nothing!!!

Anyway, surely the armadillo's hat should be mauve?

Don't be stupid, only deranged dodo's wear mauve hat's and do you know how hard it is to find deranged dodo's nowadays? On second thoughts I like your idea, it's bold, rash and illogical. It's bound to work! Bring an armadillo wearing a mauve hat, post haste!

When nobody's around, the smiley's don't animate. The proof is simple. It's an extrapolation of the good old "when the tree falls in the forest it doesn't make any sound!"!!!!

Yes, I'm joking ;)

I thought that "sight" as we call it was merely an interpretation of rays of light as they reach our brains. So as smilies are simply images on a competer screen (sad, but ultimately true) they only "exist" in their own form when we interpret them via our brains. It is the same with sound. If there is no one to hear it then all that exists are vibrations in the air. So no, the tree makes no "sound" as such.

Sigmar - my first thought was "What about a deranged dodo?". But then I realised that you are quite right. The market for them is just laughable these days. If any of you have deranged dodos I recommend selling them now, it really is a sellers market.

When we don't see them, smileys are planning to take over the whole world!
I thought everyone knew this

You know, when noone is around, the smilies have wars all over the forums...where tries to convince them all to join him and overthrow the humans. Really truly, my tells me bout it.
