According to my experience, the XP cap remover works but you will see it when you reach next level. Suppose you are behind the XP cap. You have to continue your work until you reach next level. Then you gain all missing levels at once.
Note: the XP cap remover ITSELF is good for nothing. Well, you gain next levels but that's all. No HP. No improvements in saving throws. No additional proficiences. Only levels. If you really want to get rid of the XP cap then you need the "level 50 rules": a set of files which extend the internal tables of the game up to level 50. The files are to be copied in your "override" directory and they give you not only levels but also proficiencies, saving throws, new spells and special abilities. In fact, the XP cap remover is one of these files.
