Hey guys,
I'm struggling! I should do more study! I work very long hours, have a lot of travel time to and from work, as well as a number of other commitments throughout the week. By the time I finally have some time on my hands, I can't be bothered opening up my text books! I just do the exams whenever I feel ready which means that I have no real pressure to study under a timeframe. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a study routine? I don't know, maybe 1 hour of study, 1 hour of BG2..... What works for you? Aviendha. |
Here's a small tip from me:i always studied the same evenings every
week. And if for some reason i couldn't,i studied the day before or the day after.I found it helpful during my studyevening to do other things inbetween, play a game, chat some online or whatever.Helped me to get my mind of things, something i personally need when studying, but that's probably different for every one. |
well for me i try to follow a technique in studying.
play for 90% of your free time but use the last 10% for full concentrated no disruptions studying time. it works for me |
hmm you suggested one hour of study, one hour of BG2. This does not work. I can guarantee it. You will end up spending your study time thinking about your game to come. And then you will stay on the game for too long. So dont try that :/ same thing applies to forums.
Instead of just reading over your text books, make sure you make your own notes. Just simple and consise, but with hopefully every bit of information you can put down. little boxes etc. are good. Drink lots of water while you are studying. Like HEAPS. If your mind is on other things, dont try and study anyway, it is futile. Go away and come back when your mind is clearer. Dont study when you are tired. You will remember very little. I dont know how much these will help, they are from a teenager, but they get me excellent marks! |
Thank you Scholarcs!!! :D
That's the sort of help I'm after. Anyone else? |
I think Scholarcs covered pretty much everything
I can only tell you what not to do... - Don't think that beer will help you to relax so you can study more. - Don't call your girlfriend up and ask her to help you study, not much studying gets done - Don't leave a terms worth of study 'till the last nite and think you can cram it all in (I only got 1/2 a terms worth, so do it two nites before ;) ) - Don't believe your mate when he says, "Don't worry 'bout studying, the tests a breeze" - Don't skim study! I ended up with some very bizzare answers sometimes That's all I can think of atm, hope I helped :D |
Studying is an art. And I have perfected it :D . Of course, what works for me might not work for you; you have to find your own thing. But here are some things to keep in mind.
Small amounts - I can't study for more than 40 minutes in one go, max. And with really boring material, it gets a lot less than that ;) . But as long as you get it all done, it doesn't matter if you study for four hours and then have a break, or study for half hour bursts and have lots of breaks. I find it's really useful though to have short periods - you can refresh and go do something fun, then come back when you're ready. Study according to the type of test. If it's multi choice, don't knock yourself out writing copious notes; reading the material through a few times should be enough. How many times you need to read depends on your memory, but multi-choice is recognition, so no need to know things too well. Essay or short answer exams on the other hand require more work, they're testing recall so you need to be able to come up with answers off your own accord, thus prepare accordingly. Finally, make a study plan. I used to do this to procrastinate, to look like I was doing something productive but actually just putting off real study lol ;) , but it really is a useful thing to do. If you know when you should be doing stuff and how long you'll need, you won't worry about not getting it all done. It doesn't have to be really accurate, like from 10:00 to 10:30 study, 10:30-10:35 break, just what days you might study and so on. Hope this helps |
It's been mentioned, but don't wait til the day before the test to open your books... like me in college... Somehow I always passed but it is not a good strategy...(well duh)

what ailea said don't go on for 4 houres in a row
8 times half an houre is much more effective Be sure to cut urself compleetly off and when you have a break Cut urself compleetly loose from the study Else u'll associate study to much with free time and u'll get easily destracted |
Just to echo what others have said - you have maximum concentration for ONLY 20 MINUTES! After that your concentration declines. So go for 30 or 40 minutes, then take a break. Studying for longer than an hour is wasted time because you just don't take it in.
My study routine (I was working full-time too) in the run-up to my exams last year, starting about a week beforehand was: 40 minutes studying -make notes, don't just read Go make cup of tea, get some fresh air, watch something on TV. When you feel rested, go back and do another 40 minutes. Mind you, I didn't actually do too much hard-graft. I started about a week before each exam, including a weekend which was fairly intense study time. I'm sure there are plenty of posts from me dating from May last year though - still time to have fun! And make sure you do have some relax time. I did well in my exams *proud smile* |
