This is beginning to get ridiculous ... My favorite part:

Quote:

He said there would be an international marketing campaign whereby "tourists can enjoy smoke free environment and the sick man of Europe image becomes a thing of the past".

"There are still national habits which hold us back - the time has come for this parliament to accelerate improvements in health," he declared.
Also:

Quote:

There is evidence a ban can cut deaths from passive smoking
I would love to see the evidence on how many Scots die from second hand smoke ...

Hey,,,think of it as Smoking is a political statement against America, since Tobacco originated here...so if you smoke, you support the US.

Say it like that, and everyone outside the US would stop immediately. :D

Seriously, I read an article that was either African-based or Chinese-based, and it claimed that the US sells cigarettes to other nations with the intent on killing them. This report that I read two years ago in a classroom textbook in college claims that the US cigarettes sold overseas are more hazardous to one's health than the domestic ones, and had some evidence to back it up.

Alas, poor Yorick, we could use you now -- FOR SOME REAL FIREWORKS.

Honorable Thread, I hereby dub thee Smoking Ban Round 3. No punches below the belt until at least page 3, please -- *ding* *ding*

Well, I'll see if I can dig you up some stats - passive smoking is pretty lethal.

Having said that, I'm against a ban because:

1) I like the occasional smoke
2) In countries and cities that have banned smoking, its been a real hit on small business like pubs etc.

I'm against a smoking ban on public places myself, except for places like hospitals and gas stations.

On pubs and bars, leave it to the owners.

Except the French. I guess they're our allies after all, eh?

I haven't gotten a memo since I wrote that essay that connected 9/11 to The Vagina Monologues...

A note on the Euro/French comment: The USA has done the best toward anti-smoking efforts when compared with the EU. Just your factoid for the day -- no meaning implied therein.

If you do want meaning -- try this: our anti-smoking efforts in the US have obviously spread far and wide. I think this depravation of liberty in a command-and-control manner is another "crack in the egg" the philosopher Hayek once spoke of. Of course, I have a cigarette burning in the ashtry right now.
