Can anyone think of a way of making an English Lesson more interesting apart from talking to your friend and sucking sweets?

Am I the only person that thinks English is a rubbish GCSE and we should be able to drop it in Year 10?

GCSE??

If you think English is boring, just think how frustrating it is to a non-native speaker to learn.

rough/ tough
through / though / dough
bough
cough / laugh

just that one letter combo alone is schizophrenic

Personally, English lessons are one of my favourite subjects. I really enjoy writing all the essays for it is one of the few times I am allowed to exercise my creativity. Although in terms of appreciating the language, that would be due to English Literature.

I still remember doing my summaries in poetry form. :D

Not that I got any bonus marks for it.

Ain't alliteration an awesome artform?

Yeah, it is. But I know actors (a.k.a. drama-schmama people) who can talk full tilt in iambic pentameter. :D

I wouldn't call any of the words you listed frustrating to learn, though... We may be foreigners, but we're not that stupid. ;)

I consider myself a casual admirer of the English language( Stardard British English to be more precise).

As for weird words, know how to pronounce the following words correctly? ;)

1) Quay
2) Suite
3) Medicine( you will be surprised how many people do not know how to say this word properly)
4) Sugar
5) Salmon

Then we have exceptions to the rules which can be confusing of you do not know them. Like why is the plural of mouse, mice, but for house, it is houses and not hice. ;)

I think it depends on your native language whether some words cause problems in the pronunciation or not, though; I don't think those you've listed will cause many problems to Dutchies, but I can see how, for instance, the French will have problems pronouncing some of them.
