Hi,

Anyone who can help me that has experience making and playing a sorcerer just replie to this post and fill me in on all the secrets please. My main worry is can a socerer get really powerful.

Ar-Cunin 06-20-2002 06:03 AM

I assume you'll have a party along with you.

Sorcerers can be very powerful - but you'll have to be careful to choose the right spells. look through the manual to find a mixture of attack spells (fireball), defensive spells (stoneskin), spellbreakers (breach), and summoning spells (nishuruu).

also try making a search of this forum with "solo sorceror" - that should enable you to find Dundee Slaytern's thread, where he have made a complete list of spells a (solo) sorcerer 'needs'.

P.S. AND WELCOME TO IW

A very decent guide is Pat Bou's guide to Sorcerers. Pat Bou is a guy from BGDungeon who made this guide in the last days of that site, February 2001 I think... Now it's also placed on GameBanshee. Heck, I'm even named in the credits. I suddenly feel so old. ;)

Hmm.... How to make a soceror powerful it depends on several things
1) What is your style (summoning things, area effect, defense)
2) are you soloing?
3) if not what is your party
4) see 1
that is what i have t say if you answer these i think i can help more

Well if you go solo, you have to be flawless in your stradegy, I wasn't and I turned to, *sniffle* Viconia and Korgan for help. I failed you Master Eliminster :(

Anywho, just make sure to get spells that are very sorcerer benivicle, escpecially playing solo. If you are, then pitfiend can be great, if you have protectionf rom evil. Also, all the coolest stuff goes your way, since theres no party memebrs to give too

Sorcerer and Paladins are the best at Soloing, in my oppinion

Decent... but I get the impression he does not know the true power of a Sorcerer when played properly.

And don’t bother carrying along these acorns, you won’t be able to afford the space in your pack and there is almost no chance that you’ll do this quest or even go to the Windspear Hills (I haven’t and I am in the Underdark at level 18).
*cough* *cough*

Last I check, Firkragg was a dessicated corpse before I entered the Underdark. It is amazing what Time Stop and Improved Alacrity can do... and besides... killing the Dyrads is an EVIL act. I will never kill them with a Good-aligned Sorcerer.

I fought him at level 19.

you can consider Time Stop and Shapechange
Can consider Time Stop? My goodness! This is the spell for any Mage/Sorcerer users. It is the first spell I pick when I reach level 18. By the power of this spell in combination with other spells like Project Image, a Mage/Sorcerer is virtually untouchable for almost all of the rest of the game.

Only 4 ToB characters and one room are not affected by Time Stop. Gate is a laughable spell, because frankly, Pit Fiends do not cut it, unless you are playing on low difficulty.

The slot for Improved Invisibility is wasted slot. Why? Staff of Magi my friend, Staff of Magi. Remember, a Sorcerer cannot change his/her spell selection, so never, ever, choose a spell that will become redundant. Which is why I find it amusing to see this statement,

Long term thinking is the key of this process for the sorcerer
There are other nitpicks I have, but I think the rest are up to personal preferences. Like what alignment I should choose. Yeesh-sha-ba, I always play Chaotic Good. I consider myself a powergaming roleplayer. I always try to find out the best tactics without sacrificing roleplay.

Oh... and out of morbid curiosity... how did Pat complete the final battle in ToB with this build with no Wish spell? Did he use the Project Image + Wish Scroll trick?

And wait... no Pierce Shield? How did he defeat Demogorgan or the Ravager then?

well, DON'T bother with "Find Familiar" - waste of a slot ;)

get "Tenser's Transformation" and "Enchated Weapon" when able - there are poionts in games where you have to duel others (also in ToB) and TT is a good spell ;)

For the Copper Coronet duel, a combination of Stoneskin, Mirror Image, and Emotion = easy win. If you are sadistic, repeatedly shoot Melf's Acid Arrows and run around. ;)

For the duel with the Drow Captain in ToB, Improved Alacrity = He Don't Know What The Heck Hit Him, or He Sees What Is Going To Hit Him And Cries.

dont forget that you can still use scrolls and wands as a sorceror. if there is a spell you like, but dont plan on useing it that much, then dont pick it. just buy or find it, and use it if you feel you need to. wands are excedeingly nice to have. wand of cloudkill and wand of summoning are my two personal favorites. cloudkill for fighting large amounts of monsters (getting the celestial fury was easy this way) and the wand of summoning for when fighting mages. just cast it, and watch as the spells are wasted. oh, and a spell that is a MUST is Abi-Dalzims horrid wilting!!!! best spell in the game in my opinion.

Dundee, keep in mind this guide was created before Throne of Bhaal was released. We didn't even know about the existance of a Demogorgan and a Ravager at that point. ;)
And besides, I soloed a sorcerer myself, and I have *never* used a single timestop, wish, project image or pierce shield spell. And I still was horribly overpowered because of Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wailting and all the summoning spells (Mordekainen's Swords and Elementals). You might think they won't do the trick but they most certainly did. I've soloed Shadows of Amn (with XP cap removed) and it was ridiculously easy at the end. ;)
