My dad's just come back from South Korea where he was at a conference. He visited a collegue's flat and this guy has 100MBit/s internet access at his house. And this is not uncommon - it costs him around $40/month!
NOT FAIR!!!!!! :( Here in Europe our stupid governments/telecomms companies are still struggling to provide decent ADSL services with 1/2 or 1MBit/s!
I know I know, it's because in Europe we have our old copper wire infrastructure and in Korea they had nothing up till 20 years ago or so and then they went straight to installing opical fibres....but still it's not fair! Don't you all agree?

hmm 100MBits/sec - that's like downloading 12.5 megabytes/sec. Hmm movies in 1 minute? - No problem!

Your point is? No country in Europe has services like that and many countries in Europe are smaller than S. Korea

I have heard that Korea has the best high speed internet connectivity around.

Here (in Sweden) I think that they already have a system of optical fibres, but they are for the most part not connected to the households. Kinda waste, donīt you think. The goverment have been talking of broadband acess to everyone, but itīs still just that, talks. But the system is there and I believe you can access it if you pay some dough and draw cables to your house.

Yeah the thing in Korea (well Seoul anyway) is that most people live in large apartment blocks often built by the companies they work at. The company builds the whole block so they supply the piping for everything from water to internet stream and so they can fit all the pipes cheaply in one "tunnel". That's never gonna happen here in Europe... oh well.

Well, let's all move to south Korea then. :D

Kakero 04-30-2003 07:14 PM

heh, Koreans, always trying to be better than us.

btw, South Koreans got access to cheap broadband service. you can find cyber cafe everyway. since koreans despise consoles such as ps2 and gamecube. they spend much of their time playing multiplayer pc games. that's why you can see many koreans in battlenet. ;)

I know businesses here can get fiber optic internet (I am trying to talk my boss into getting it for our office). Not sure about this, but I don't think it is available for homes here. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

I went to Papua New Guinea very briefly and you know what? Some of the people living there exist in ramshackle huts with no electricity at all!
NOT FAIR!!!!!! :(
All relative uncle Vask ;) I guess you'll just have to swallow your pride and accept your snails-pace internet access
